The Border Studies Program is newly situated in the southern Arizona Borderlands in Tucson, Arizona and "Ambos" Nogales (Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora). Immigration issues are at the forefront in this region as the Arizona-Sonora border is the most heavily crossed area of the border that divides Mexico and the United States. Participants study the complexities of immigration and immigration policy, as well as engage with controversial issues relating to human rights, the environment, labor practices, economics, public health, and education. Visits to central Mexico and other sites along the border provide students with a more holistic understanding of the northern Mexico border. The southern Arizona borderlands provide a rich learning environment for Border Studies participants to explore the multifaceted issues that exist along the U.S.-Mexico border, and begin their path toward becoming well-informed, global citizens.
