In their own words...

Brittany's update from the border:

The last few weeks have been extremely busy and it is starting to sink in for all of us how little of the program is left, especially with all the ethnography and book report work we have been doing, but nevertheless the fun continues.

Two weeks ago we made a group trip to Chihuahua, the capital of the state of Chihuahua (where we all are). We set out in a fifteen passenger van and SUV with Adriaan’s pop mix cd and Mikaela’s mix (guess the musical association) cd and were on our way.

We passed many military checkpoints, toll booths (which cost $15.00 compared to the dollar it costs in the US), and then went through Villahumeda a small town with a series of stands selling delicious quesidillas and empanadas. In Chihuahua we were able to check out the local museums and monuments which included Pancho Villa’s Mansion and La Plaza de Hidalgo. The city was very much focused on the Mexican Revolution and was very different from Ciudad Juárez. It is amazing the distance to El Paso makes on Juárez. We were also able to check out La Taverna a four story bar/nightclub in the pronaf area of Chihuahua, it was surrounded by other night clubs with country music and live bands.

The next day we made a trip to Cuahtémoc where we bought some delicious apples and explored some small shops where they sell curios (the Mexican equivalent of souvenirs) and had lunch. That night we found a strangely European café and spent the night listening to live music, sipping our warm drinks and eating dessert. Oh and I can’t forget to mention we ate two delicious dinners while away from Juárez.

The next day we split up with one group going to Majalca, a state park and the other hanging out in Chihuahua for another day. The ride home was peaceful and we met all of our host families at UACJ.

This weekend we have the advisory board meetings where we will meet professors from different colleges involved with the program and have a chance to talk with them about our ethnographies and what’s going on in the border region.

Also there are all of the Day of the Dead celebrations that will be going on, a Homecoming football game at UTEP and Katie’s birthday so it should be good. But countdown a month and ten days until December 10 and we all go our own ways which for the majority of us includes going home to the cold and snow.
