About the Programs
The passion which Earlham students bring to the study of the environment comes joined with a striking idealism, the desire to make a difference in the world. One of our overarching objectives is to enable our students to make their desires a reality, to become “informed activists.” Through academic preparation and real world experience, Environmental Programs students encounter the kinds of activities that succeed in bringing about real world change. They learn not only the particulars of their discipline: they realize the power of truly making a difference.
Earlham’s Environmental Programs prepare students to discover creative and viable solutions to the environmental challenges facing our planet. We apply a multidisciplinary approach, using knowledge and skills from a range of disciplines. Interest in environmental sustainability permeates Earlham’s curriculum and community life. You’ll find such courses as ecological biology, environmental geoscience, earth-friendly construction, environmental poetry, politics of the environment and environmental economics, to name a few. Environmental Programs are also informed by Earlham’s Quaker roots, underscoring this basic idea: that a healthy environment is built on social justice as well as good science.
