111 BASIC JAPANESE I (5 credits)
An outcome-based, interactive approach to basic Japanese that emphasizes
the development of the language and cultural competence needed to communicate
with native speakers. Communication skills: interpretative, interpersonal
and presentational, are developed gradually from the beginning. Includes
daily and weekly quizzes, and requires active participation in and outside

JAPN 301 ADVANCED
READING (4 credits)
A study of Japanese culture focusing on developing reading skills using authentic
written and audio-visual materials. Emphasizes acquiring an advanced level
of expressions and patterns to understand relationships between language
and culture.
JAPN 302 ADVANCED
WRITING (4 credits)
A study of Japanese culture focusing on developing writing skills using materials
of Japanese origin. (A)
JAPN 303 ADVANCED
SPEAKING (4 credits)
A study of Japanese culture focusing on developing expressive communication.
Activities include mastery of task-based exchanges, study of discourse development,
script writing and performance, study of male and female speech. (A)
JAPN 351 TEACHING
JAPANESE AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (3 credits)
Introduction of basic current principles of language learning and teaching,
and unique features of Japanese. Students practice teaching in drill sessions
in Basic and Intermediate Japanese courses on campus and/or teaching in elementary
school. Prerequisite: Advanced oral proficiency in Japanese.
JAPN 352 TEACHING
JAPANESE AS A SECOND LANGUAGE: PRACTICUM (1-3 credits)
Students develop further pedagogical skills through teaching practice. Prerequisite: JAPN
351.
JAPN 420 SEMINAR:
JAPANESE SOCIETY AND CULTURE (3-4 credits)
A study of aspects of Japanese society and culture through a variety of media,
literatures, and films. Students engage in projects and build independent
research skills. Taught in Japanese. Prerequisite: Advanced language courses
or consent of instructor.
JAPN 422 SEMINAR:
JAPANESE LINGUISTICS (3-4 credits)
An investigation of the origin, writing system, sound system, word formation
and structure of Japanese language as well as the relationships between Japanese
language and culture. Taught in Japanese and English. Prerequisite: Advanced
language courses or the consent of instructor.
JAPN 485 INDEPENDENT
STUDY (1-3 credits)
Self-designed study to accommodate individual students needs and interests.
Intended mainly for the advanced student for an investigation of a special
topic. Occasionally offered to improve students basic skills.
