Language and Literature Pedagogy
Students will find a wide range of language, literature, and culture courses. The modern language curricula are designed to develop skills in understanding, reading, writing, and speaking the language, with special emphasis on communicative competence, They are also designed to give the student substantial background in each language's literature, history and culture.

Double Majors
Double majors in at least two of the languages and literatures offered by department, or double majors combining a language/literature curriculum with another field are common, and can be succesfully completed within four years.

Off-Campus Study
Many students participate in one of our international programs in France, Germany, Austria, México, Martinique, Greece, and Japan. Also further off-campus study opportunities can be arranged for students through the GLCA consortia. Visit the International Programs Office to learn more about Earlham's programs abroad.

International Studies
Many students who do not pursue a language major, but who have a strong interest in foreign language, literature, and culture, find that a major in International Studies incorporates these interests into a coherent major. Earlham's International Studies major is unique because of its stress on language and cultural competence.

Foreign Language in Curriculum (FLIC)
Many courses throughout the College's curriculum give students of second languages special opportunities to practice their linguistic skills. Courses in philosophy, politics, economics, anthropology, history, and literature regularly invite students to read key course texts in their original non-English versions. Courses that contain a foreign language component are so identified (FLIC).

Teaching Assistants
Peer teaching has a long and succesful tradition at Earlham. Many advanced students serve as assistant instructors in one of the language programs, teaching small sections, helping in classes. or working as audio-lab assistants. Thus, while learning more about an language, these students also earn a small salary. Also, each year many of the language departments will hire a teaching assistant from abroad. The assistant, who usually is a recent college graduate, helps to teach class adding their own perspective to the course.

Language Houses
Language students may choose to live in one of Earlham's four language houses: Deutsches Haus, La Casa Hispana, Maison Française, or Japan House. Language houses provide an environment where the target language is spoken frequently, and also host a variety of activities-from sushi banquets to foreign film fests. Each year, several visiting assistant teachers from other countries live in these language houses along with Earlham students. Click here to learn more about Earlham's language houses.
