Bob Johnstone is professor of Politics at Earlham College. He has been at Earlham since 1975, teaching American politics, political philosophy, and Humanities. He holds a B. A. degree in history from Vanderbilt University, and the M. A. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. At Earlham, Bob teaches a wide array of courses:

Bob's research interests lie in the American presidency and political leadership. He is the author of Jefferson and the Presidency: Leadership in the Young Republic, Cornell University Press, 1978. The book is listed in the American Historical Society's Guide to Historical Literature as one of only thirty works in the section "The New Republic, 1801-1815: National Government and Politics." Bob has published additional work on Jefferson and the early presidency. He has also developed and taught a seminar at Earlham on "Thomas Jefferson and the American Enlightenment," sponsored by a grant from the Lilly Endowment.

In recent years Bob's interests have turned to the study of the politics of Ireland and especially Northern Ireland. He has made visits to both, has participated in a faculty/student collaborative research seminar on the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland, and has developed a new course on "The Politics of Britain and Ireland."

Bob Johnstone has been active in the arts in Richmond in both performance and administration. He has performed at Richmond Civic Theatre in a number of musical and dramatic productions and has appeared in Gilbert & Sullivan performances at Earlham. He has performed many times in the "Brown Bag" concert series at Earlham with his wife, Marjorie. Bob is a member of the board of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, serving as its president in 1988-90, and currently as chair of its Artistic Advisory Committee. He is the program annotator for the Symphony and the host of its broadcasts over Earlham station WECI-FM and over Dayton Public Radio, WDPR-WDPG. He also hosts classical music programs over both stations. He has also served on the Board of the Whitewater Opera Company.
