HISTORY

During the past twenty years the number of college and university peace studies programs has grown from a small handful to over 200. This unprecedented growth of programs in one field represents a phenomenal increase in the number of faculty, students, and academic institutions with interests in the study of peace, conflict, justice, and global security. The Peace Studies Association is a response to this rapid growth.

In May of 1987, fifteen directors and representatives of existing college and university peace studies programs met at Colgate University to identify needs of faculty in peace studies and areas of cooperation among programs.

December 5, 1987, a second meeting was convened at the University of California-Irvine. Representatives of 23 programs attended and many others expressed their strong support for the initiative. This meeting explored more fully the needs of peace studies programs, agreed upon the necessary steps toward meeting those needs, and formed The Peace Studies Association.

The association's executive office is presently hosted by the Peace and Global Studies Program office at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana.
