Descriptions of Fund Types Appearing on Your Award Notification

Scholarships

These funds are awarded based on ability or involvement in activities. At Earlham they can include, but are not limited to: Presidential Honors Scholarship, National Merit Scholarship, Wilkinson Award, Bonner Scholarship, Cunningham Cultural Scholarship, and the C.B. Edwards Chemistry Scholarship. Recipients are selected by the Admissions Office. These funds do not have to be paid back. This section should also include any outside scholarships you are receiving from a local, corporate or other source outside of Earlham. There are no athletic scholarships awarded at Earlham, in accordance with our NCAA Division III participation agreement.

Grants

These are usually need-based funds. They can include, but are not limited to: Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Earlham College Grant, and the Earlham Enhancement Grant. The Higher Education Award, Freedom of Choice Grant, and 21st Century Award are Indiana state grants. Grant funding does not have to be repaid

Student Employment

If you are financially eligible, you may receive a Federal College Work-Study allotment as part of your financial aid award. It will appear in a paragraph below the listing of your other financial aid. This means you are approved to work on campus to help offset your college expenses. If you are an International Student, you may receive a similar allotment called a Work Award.

Loans

These are student loans which must be repaid following graduation, withdrawal or dropping to less than half-time enrollment. You may be awarded a Perkins Loan, a Direct Stafford Loan, and/or a Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. Direct PLUS (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students) Loans are also available, and must be requested with an Earlham PLUS Loan Request Form.

All the funds listed above are described in more detail in the Earlham College Terms & Conditions of Financial Aid pamphlet which accompanies your actual Award Notification.
