Advising Tips

All prospective majors are encouraged to take Introduction to Dance or Stagecraft in their first year at Earlham College, as they are required for the major and each fulfills a portion of the Fine Arts General Education requirement. In addition, enrolling in an Applied Theatre course is an excellent way to become involved in a departmental production either onstage or backstage. It also will satisfy a portion of the Fine Arts General Education requirement.

Based on our experience, students carrying greater than a normal load (15 credits) should not be involved in a theatrical production. Plays take (1) a significant amount of physical time to rehearse and build, (2) complete dedication, commitment and passionate attachment to the production from start to finish, and (3) emotional and spiritual energy to create a production that truly captures the life of the characters and the hearts and minds of the audience. Involvement in a production is not an excuse to miss classes or turn in late assignments.

A strong liberal arts education is the best preparation for a career in theatre. Therefore, the Theatre faculty strive to make time commitments reasonable for rehearsals and construction. Seldom if ever has a student needed to “pull an all-nighter” to open a play. Students should be selective about the experiences in which they put their time and energy. An important development for students is to learn not to over-commit themselves, to learn to use their time wisely, well and to good purposes.

Students spend their senior year preparing and producing their senior projects. Their project, submitted to the Theatre faculty as a proposal, should be approved by the end of their junior year.
