Liberal Arts Education

Earlham College has identified a list of skills and ways of thinking about the world which the Theatre Art Department strives to develop in all the students with whom we come in contact. These students work with us, learn with us and create with us in our class gatherings, play rehearsals and construction times, student-initiated projects and joint student-theatre faculty meetings. Our methods, pedagogic approaches and learning activities are as varied as the students and theatre faculty, but what follows are the educational goals of a liberal arts education we believe we support in our work:

  • skills in reading, reflection, writing and oral communication

  • the ability to interpret a work, idea text or culture from different perspectives

  • skill to gather and evaluate information from many sources

  • experiences in engaging interdisciplinary and integrative inquiries

  • a sense of responsibility that comes with knowledge and sharing ideas

  • an understanding of the formal dynamics of works of art

  • personal creativity and confidence in one's own ideas

  • skill in group and cooperative learning

  • an awareness of self as an integration of biological organism, political and social being, make of art and reflective, thoughtful moral agent skills and desire to be a lifelong learner.
