• Earlham gives partial financial aid awards with a current maximum value of one-half tuition. These awards are renewable for each year of the student’s degree program. The partial financial aid awards are based on demonstrated financial need, academic accomplishments and personal qualities. Students who receive one of these may be eligible to work on campus. It is important to note that the amount of financial aid is not increased after a student has enrolled at the College.
• The College also gives two full financial aid awards each year to entering first-year students. These awards can be renewed for each year of the student’s degree program and will cover tuition, fees, room, board and books. They are awarded based on demonstrated financial need, academic accomplishments and personal qualities. Students who receive one of these awards are also eligible to work on campus.
The process of receiving one of these awards is very competitive. Last year, over 250 students applied. Students who have attended another university or college in the U.S. or abroad are considered transfer students by the College and are not eligible for the full financial aid awards. Because the competition for the full financial aid awards is very rigorous, priority will be given to students who have at least a 600 (250/100 or 80/120 computer-based) TOEFL or a 1300 combined score on the SAT.
Although the full financial aid awards cover all fixed fees at the College, students should anticipate needing an additional $2,500 for their first year. This amount should cover the enrollment deposit, travel to the U.S. and personal expenses for the first year. Earlham will not waive the enrollment deposit or pay for a student’s travel to the U.S. Students will need approximately $1,000 of personal or family funds for each subsequent year of enrollment to cover personal expenses.
Employment opportunities for international students in the U.S. are restricted by law. Students who receive a work award as part of their financial aid package may work a limited number of hours on campus. Students are paid $6.40 per hour for on-campus positions. They can earn up to $2,048 per academic year if awarded the full work award amount through the Financial Aid Office. The Immigration and Naturalization Service severely restricts employment off campus. No international student can be permitted to work off campus during the first academic year and only when meeting strict criteria will s/he be permitted to do so in subsequent years.
