Health Insurance
All international students are required to have health insurance due to the high cost of medical care in the U.S. Students must participate in the Earlham health insurance plan if they have no other coverage that is valid in the U.S. Earlham's current plan covers 80% (at facilities approved as “in network”) or 60% (at facilities considered “out-of-network”) of basic medical expenses up to $50,000 for each injury or sickness. There is an annual deductible of $100. In 2012-2013 the fee for one full year will be approximately $1,000. Eyeglasses and dental work are not covered by Earlham student insurance.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
Earlham gives partial financial aid awards with a current maximum value of one-half tuition. These awards are renewable for each year of the student’s degree program. The partial financial aid awards are based on demonstrated financial need, academic accomplishments and personal qualities. Students who receive one of these may be eligible to work on campus. It is important to note that the amount of financial aid is not increased after a student has enrolled at the College.
Graduates of the United World College are eligible for special funding at Earlham College through the generosity of the Davis Foundation.
Students should anticipate needing an additional $2,500 for their first year. This amount should cover the enrollment deposit, travel to the U.S. and personal expenses for the first year. Earlham will not waive the enrollment deposit or pay for a student’s travel to the U.S. Students will need approximately $1,000 of personal or family funds for each subsequent year of enrollment to cover personal expenses.
Employment
International students may receive an allotment called “Work Awards.” Employment opportunities for international students in the U.S. are restricted by law. Students who receive a work award as part of their financial aid package may work a limited number of hours on campus. Currently, students are paid $6.40 per hour for on-campus positions. They can earn up to $2,048 per academic year if awarded the full work award amount through the Financial Aid Office. The Immigration and Naturalization Service severely restricts employment off campus. No international student can be permitted to work off campus during the first academic year and only when meeting strict criteria will s/he be permitted to do so in subsequent years.
