Birding Big Day

Birding Big Day Goes Internatonal!

In 1982, Earlham biology professors Jim Cope and Bill Buskirk created Birding Big Day, a yearly tradition of fundraising for the College through a day of birding in the Whitewater Valley. After Jim passed away in March 2002, Bill opened the tradition to even more birding enthusiasts in the Earlham community. Every year since then, alumni, students, faculty and staff form birding teams with the challenge of seeking as many different species they can find in a day.

Birding Big Day has grown into an enjoyable annual custom and a great fundraising opportunity. Participants collect pledges based on the number of different species that might be identified. Outright gifts in honor of the day are also welcome.

We ask that Birding Big Day pledges be honored by June 30, the end of our fiscal year. If you didn't pledge, but would still like to make a gift, just print the pledge form and mail it to the College, or use our secure on-line giving option and specify "Birding Big Day" on the form.

The 27th annual Birding Big Day was May 8-9, 2009.

This year we invited everyone to join, wherever you were in the world. Read Bill's field report for details about this year's International Birding Big Day event.

Check out the 2009 bird list and see how many you can identify.

A big thanks to Jonathan Doherty '80 for compliling the global map to show where species were found throughout the world & by which teams.
