Gifts of Securities or Mutual Fund
More and more alumni and friends donate securities
to Earlham each year. Your gift of stocks, bonds, or other
publicly traded securities entitles you to a charitable deduction
for the full fair market value of appreciated securities held
longer than one year. In addition, you do not incur capital
gains tax on the transfer of such securities.
If you have any questions about gifts of securities, please contact Kevin Klose via e-mail or by phone at 765-983-1622.
How To Give Marketable Securities to Earlham
When making a gift of long-term appreciated securities,
be sure to transfer ownership of the securities to Earlham. Do
not sell the securities on your own. This protects you from the
capital gains tax on any appreciation.
Securities can be transferred to Earlham three ways: electronically, by mail,
and by re-registration in Earlham's name. Please be sure to notify Earlham
of any stock transfers so that we know where the gift came from.
If Your Stock is Held in a Brokerage Account
Contact your broker to inform him/her that you wish to donate securities to Earlham and ask them to transfer them via DTC to Earlham's account at Merrill Lynch in Indianapolis. More often than not, your broker will request written instructions from you regarding such transfers.
You will need to supply them with the following information on where to send the DTC:
Merrill Lynch in Indianapolis, IN: |
DTC #5198 |
Account Name: |
Earlham College |
Account Number: |
613-04077 |
Merrill Lynch Broker: |
Jason Loveless |
Phone (toll free): |
866/755-3102 |
E-mail: |

With this method, Earlham will value your gift at the mean price of the stock as traded on the date the stock is deposited into the College’s account. This will generally be one or two days after you instruct your broker to make the transfer.

If You Wish to Give Shares of a Mutual Fund
Gifts of mutual fund shares may also be given to the College. Most mutual fund companies have a form you must complete to effect the transfer, so you will need to contact your company and request directions on how to make such a gift. It is wise to inform the Alumni and Development of your plans so staff members can assist you in this process. Transferring mutual funds may take between two and three weeks to accomplish.
