Carolyn Mae Pickering
NEW CASTLE, IN-- Carolyn Mae Pickering, 101, passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2007, at the Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle after an 11-day illness. A daughter of the late Robert E. Henley and Ruby Hall Henley Houser, Carolyn was born on Jan. 9, 1906, near Straughn, Ind. She grew up and lived all her life in the Straughn and Lewisville area before moving to New Castle in 1976. Carolyn graduated from the Straughn High School with the class of 1923, then attended Ball State and Earlham College. A homemaker, she and her husband farmed for many years north east of Lewisville. She was a member of the Lewisville Presbyterian Church, the Women's Association of the church and the Franklin Township Homemakers Club. She taught adult and children's Sunday school for many years at the church. A well known pianist, Carolyn played for her church and also entertained the residents of The Waters, Holly Hill, Heritage House and other area nursing homes. She also enjoyed crocheting. Carolyn had worked as a nurse's aide at the Henry County Memorial Hospital for several years and also did volunteer work as a Gray Lady and in the gift shop at the hospital, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Henry County and the reading program at Blue River Schools. Survivors include four children, Mary Lou Wicker of Straughn, Robert E. (Ruth) Pickering of Kirklin, John S. (Frieda) Pickering of Lewisville and Janet C. (Ronald) Wesley of Lewisville.
