James Orr
James Robert Orr recently passed away from complications of Parkinson's disease while at his home in Diamond Springs, where he had resided with his wife, Esther, for the past 11 years. He lived in the Placerville area for more than 60 years.
Jim was bom on April 6, 1913, in Pierceton, Indiana. As a youngster growing up on the family farm in rural northern Indiana, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He developed into a talented athlete and lettered in three sports at Pierceton High School in basketball, baseball, and track. He was selected as one of the top ten high school basketball players in Indiana, and received a partial scholarship to Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, following his graduation from high school in 1931. While at Earlham, he played on the only undefeated basketball team in the school's history. However, he was unable to continue his college education during the height of the Great Depression, and he moved to Sacramento, as an employee of the Warner Press until he entered the U.S. Army near the end of World War II. Following his initial training, he was stationed in the Philippines until his release from the Army at the end of the war.
Soon after returning to his family in Sacramento, he and Esther sought to relocate to a smaller community, and in 1946, they purchased the Placerville Flower Shop and the Bayless Building at 248 Main Street. The flower shop remained in operation at that location on the corner of Main and Sacramento Streets for the next 32 years until Jim retired in 1978 and sold the business. He retained ownership of the Bayless Building until the 1980's when it was sold to El Dorado Savings and Loan.
Prior to moving to Diamond Springs, Jim and Esther lived on Cold Springs Road for 50 years. They raised two children there, Sharon and Jimmy, as well as several horses, a small herd of Angus cattle, and their Brittany Spaniels. Jim is survived by Esther, their two children, four grandchildren, and two great grandsons.
He left on his last hunting trip on October 1st, 2007. Jim requested there be no services.
