Obituaries:

James Keene
KEENE, MR. JAMES W. North Muskegon Mr. James W. Keene, age 94, died peacefully on Saturday, September 26, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was born in Portland, IN, on March 3, 1915, to Emir & Pearl (McCurdy) Keene and married the former Joan Hoerner on October 8, 1938. Mr. Keene attended Earlham College and the University of Chicago, following which he moved to Muskegon to help his father start what is reputed to be the first cash & carry lumber yard in the U.S. He was a proud veteran of WWII, having served in France & England. He was an accomplished piano player, and, besides Joan, that was his love. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends at the Muskegon Country Club, was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the VFW, and was a member of First Congregational Church. SURVIVORS Daughters, Rebecca Keene '66 of CA, Jean Keene '69 of North Muskegon, Jody (Randy) Northuis of Holland, Janet Keene of North Muskegon; Son, Jerry (Vivian) Keene '72 of North Muskegon; 7 grandchildren, Christopher (Katharine) Wager, James Keene II, Emily Keene, Eric Northuis, Scott (Mikki) Northuis, Erin (Joshua) Reinert, Brent Lange; 3 great grandchildren, Mallory Reinert, Abbi & Katie Northuis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Joan, in 2004; an infant son, Henry Clay; and a sister, Margaret.

Mary Finch Johnson
Mary Finch Johnson, age 93, of Richmond, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at Friends Fellowship Retirement Community. She was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of George A. and Mae Wright Finch. She came to Richmond in 1932 to attend Earlham College, graduating in 1936. In 1937, she married E. Orville Johnson who was a longtime Earlham College faculty member. A loving wife and mother, she was a founding member of Holy Family Parish and for many years an active participant in the Richmond Garden Club and the Richmond Area Duplicate Bridge Club. She also served as editor of several editions of the Earlham College Alumnae Directory. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Orville Johnson who died in 1995; son, James F. Johnson; and granddaughter, Jennifer Johnson. Survivors include her children, Mary Anne Walker '60 of Carmel, Ind., David O. Johnson and wife Jackie of Boca Raton, Fla., Rita Pardieck '68 and husband David of Charleston, S.C., and Patricia Johnson '73 and husband Dennis Dougherty of Landisville, Pa.; grandchildren, Barbara Branstetter, Sarah Butcher, David Beam, Jeffrey Johnson, Matthew Pardieck, Renee Oen, Benjamin Pardieck, Rachel Hazelwood and Thomas Dougherty; and 12 great-grandchildren.
