The only news I have is that Bettie White Butler '45 recently enjoyed a visit with Jean Ann Hamm Balestrieri '44 in her home in Missouri.

Obituaries:

Melville Clark
MONSON - Melville Eugene Clark passed away peacefully at his home on Tues., June 23, in Ocala, FL. Mel was born May 12, 1920 in Richmond, IN; his father was Rena Fanklin Clark and mother was Mary Jane (Berry) Clark. He graduated from Richmond High School, the Chicago Art School for Graphic Arts and attended Earlham College in Richmond. He married the late Marjorie June Kenworthy in Aug., 1941, and together they had four children: Rebecca Antonacci of Somersville, CT; Cynthia Ober of Torrington, CT; David Clark '64 of Pittsburgh, PA; and the late Timothy Clark of West Charleston, VT. In Dec., 1942 "Gene" entered the Army Air Corps., 19th Photo Charting Squadron H of the 1st Charting Group, and achieved Staff Sgt., flying in B-17s across Africa, Middle East/Holy Land as photographer/mapper and tailgunner. He returned home in Dec., 1945 and worked in Richmond, IN for the Perfect Circle Co., as draftsman and NATCO as Drafting Engineer. After two years in Arizona running a watermelon farm with his new-found good friend Phil Cormier, the family packed up and headed to Connecticut, looking for a job, and at the urging of lifelong friends, Phil and Gin Cormier and Dick and Ginny Taylor - settling in the Granby, CT area. Mel worked then for Hamilton Standard Co., Hartford, CT as Sr. Drafting Engineer, and some years later formed his own M.E. Clark Company, a manufacturer's rep/sales organization, selling industrial diamonds/abrasives/cutting tools, and NIKON quality inspection equipment throughout New England until he retired. Mel was a member of the Methodist Church and a third-degree Mason. His pride and joy and focus of sweat and tears were his "weekend gentleman's farms" in the Granby area. He is survived by his current and loving wife, Virginia (Buffington) Clark, Ocala, FL., two brothers: Vernon in Indiana, and Homer in Iowa; fourteen grandchildren including Christopher Clark '92, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gladys Binns Trousdale
Gladys Marie Binns Trousdale passed away June 12, 2009. Gladys was born on July 11, 1921 in Richmond, Indiana. She attended Earlham College from 1939-1943. After graduation she worked with Miss Marshall at Earlham in Food Services for a short time and then spent a year as an intern at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Following this she was employed as dietician at West Liberty State College, West Liberty, W.Va. It was then she decided to get her Masters in Home Ec. and she enrolled in Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Gladys not only received her Masters, she met Robert B. Trousdale who became her husband in 1952. They settled in Rochester, N.Y. and had two sons. Later they moved to Southern California. At the time of her death she and Bob were living in a retirement facility in Fullerton, California. She is survived by her husband Bob, sons Bill (Cheri) and David (Mary), a sister Ruth Binns Gordon '42, five grandchildren and many friends. Gladys was a member of Orange County Home Ec club and volunteered for many years at HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program).

Monna Robinson
Monna Jeanne "Mo" Robinson, 87, of Delaware, died early Thursday morning at her residence. She was born Nov. 20, 1921, in Richmond, Ind., to Charles and Elsie (Firth) Rollf. She graduated from Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., and was employed by the Delaware City Schools where she taught French for many years. She had been a Delaware resident since the early 1950s and was a member of the William Street United Methodist Church. She was a former dance teacher who enjoyed reading, knitting, swimming and her bridge club. She is survived by two daughters, Susan (Vlassis) Koukis of Delaware and Lou Ann Robinson of Ithaca, N.Y.; son, Michael Edward (Kathryn) Robinson of Gainesville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Natalie Koukis and her husband John Derr, Alexander (April) Koukis, Andrew Koukis, Tyler and Lauren Robinson; two great- grandchildren, Penelope and Lola Derr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edward Robinson, in 1999; and a brother, Robert Rollf.

Emmett Stegall
August 8, 1921 - February 28, 2009.
Emmett Stegall was born in Richmond, IN to Kate and Ervin Stegall. He grew up in Richmond and attended Earlham College where he graduated in 1943. Upon graduating Emmett entered the U.S. Army and was sent to England. Being a Quaker, not wanting to bear arms, he was posted to military headquarters as part of the office staff. Following D Day he went to Paris for a year working at allied headquarters. It was in Paris in 1945 where he met Beatrice Ohanian. He was moved again to Germany with headquarters but returned to Paris shortly after to marry Beatrice on February 25, 1946. They were married 63 years and 3 days. They spent two weeks honeymooning on the French Riviera. Shortly after the honeymoon he returned to Germany with Beatrice as his wife. They lived in Berlin where their first son, Neil, was born in 1947. They spent another year in Frankfurt and moved to Florida where Emmett's retired parents resided. Eric was born in Deland, FL in 1949 and Claudia followed in 1955 in West Palm Beach. Emmett started Concraft, Inc. in 1955 with an extension cord and a few patio stone pans. He mixed his concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow at night after working at his day job as a foreman. His sons own and operate Concraft today. Emmett, better known as Papa, loved poetry reading, music, sailing, swimming, oil painting and playing the harmonica. He could play any tune on the harmonica. He went to various retirement homes to recite poetry to the residents. He was a self-taught guitarist and attempted to teach himself the keyboard. He played major and minor roles in local theaters and received "Best Supporting Actor" for one of his performances. He and Beatrice loved sailing the Intercostals Waterway in their 25' boat named "Island Girl". They ventured to the Bahamas one year making a night crossing. His life was full of family and he loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jane Witherby
RICHMOND, Ind. -- Margaret Jane Witherby, age 89, of Richmond, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at Reid Hospital. She was born June 19, 1919, in Richmond to Samuel B. and Mabel Martin and was a lifelong resident of this area. Jane was a graduate of Morton High School and attended McMurry College and Earlham College. She was the former president of the board of the Richmond Coca Cola Bottling Co. Jane served as president of the Richmond Day Nursery for 25 years and served on the board until her passing. Jane was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the Wayne County Historical Society. She was a Grey Lady at Reid Hospital more than 40 years. Jane served as president of the Indiana Women's Golf Association and won 10 Richmond Women's City Golf Tournaments and was inducted into the Richmond Golf Hall of Fame. Most importantly Jane loved her family and her friends. She always took great interest in their lives. Survivors include her sons, James M. Witherby and wife Angie and Samuel M. Witherby and wife Sandy, both of Richmond; grandchildren, Chad Witherby, Jill Minke and Trisha Witherby. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack R. Witherby, whom she married Oct. 2, 1943, and died March 2, 2000.
