Class Agent Mary Williams reports that several "vintage" Earlhamites attended a memorial service on September 29th for Betty Allen, wife of Ed Lee and renowned concert artist. Some of those who attended were: Chris '50 and Helen '51 Nicholson, John '50 and Marianne '53 Nelson, Joe Rabin '50 and his wife Jackie, Ralph Caplan '49 and his wife Judith.

Obituaries:

Charles Cheesman
BOONVILLE, Ind. - Charles Cheesman, 88, of Harrodsburg, died on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford. He was born on May 7, 1921, in El Paso, Texas, the son of Harlos and Melvina (Delarma) Cheesman. He attended Lincoln High School in Winchester, Ind., and entered the U.S. Marine Corps. Dec. 2, 1942, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Upon his discharge from the Marine Corps he attended Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., and the University of Arkansas. It was during this time that he became employed as a Right of Way Agent and began a longtime association with the pipeline and public utility industries. Not only did he work for various pipeline companies but also Indiana Bell Telephone Co. and Hoosier Energy. During his years of purchasing right of way, he also was active in professional rodeos throughout the southwest, oftentimes on the weekends. Charles was a member the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the American Right of Way Association and the Monroe County Saddle Club. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis J. (Davis) Cheesman of Harrodsburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Nicholas and Terri Cheesman of Boonville, Ind., and Pat and Brenda Cheesman of Mt. Carmel, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Nicole (David) Blackwell, Nicholas (Florencia) Cheesman, Natalie (Ben) Wolfe, Krista Peach, Michael (Kirby) Cheesman, Andrew Cheesman and Daniel Cheesman; eleven great-grandchildren, Marina, Addisyn and Maddox Blackwell, Sophie, Luli and Catalina Cheesman, Colin and Carter Wolfe and Haley, Anthony and Miley Peach. He was preceded in death by one son, Benjamin Cheesman, one sister, Betty Johnson, and two brothers, Dallas Cheesman and Jim Cheesman.

Barbara Holmes
Barbara A. Holmes, age 81, of Richmond, died Saturday morning (Aug. 22, 2009) at Golden Living Center-Oakridge. She was born in Richmond on May 14, 1928, to Lee and Clara E. Getz Smith and had lived here most of her life. She was a 1946 graduate of Richmond High School and was a retired employee of Ball Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Survivors include her children, Holly Holmes (Tim) Love of Richmond, Howard (Pam) Holmes of Michigan, Julianne Holmes (Doug) Cochran of Winchester, Va., Bruce (Lorie) Holmes of Huntington, Ind., Tyronne Holmes of Hawaii; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A son, Terry Lee Holmes, and a brother, James Lee Smith, are also deceased.

Barbara Pickering
Barbara Ann Jay Pickering, age 82, of Wilmington, Del., originally of Richmond, Ind., died on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Sunrise of Wilmington surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Ann was born to the late Allen and Ethel (Brown) Jay, graduated from Richmond High and attended the University of Arizona and Earlham College in Richmond, Ind. Ann was a loving wife and mother. She pursued her interest in Delaware history working for the Historical Society of Delaware as a tour guide at Old Town Hall and the Read House and then as a tour guide and flower arranger at the Nemours Mansion and Gardens for 25 years. Ann was also a freelance writer who contributed many articles to the newspapers in the Wilmington area, profiling local residents and subjects of local interest. Ann is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Frank; a son, James Pickering and his wife Natalie Watson of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Natalie Freeman and her husband Tom of Hockessin; one granddaughter, Meredith Pickering; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Deborah Zarek and the staffs at Sunrise of Wilmington and Compassionate Care Hospice for their love and support of Ann and her family over the last six years.
