Mary, my wife of 57 years, passed from life as we know it on February 16, 2009. The cause of death was Parkinson’s disease, an affliction with which she struggled for over seven years. Her last months were full of happiness, beauty and love. Almost daily there were moments of tender joy that sustained us. More than 300 friends attended the Memorial Meeting for Worship that gathered to celebrate her life. She had the unique ability of energizing that of love that is in all of us. Among those attending were Jim and Elaine Katz Coate, ‘50, who introduced us. As for me, after a long bout with congestive heart failure, I had a valve job in mid December. They just unzipped me, took out the old valve, put in a new one (bovine, again) hooked up my defibrillator and sent me home a couple of days later, 30 pounds lighter. I am now well into physical fitness rehabilitation and am looking forward to golf.

I sold our family farm last year, donated the woods to the neighboring school for nature study, and moved to Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond. It's good to be here!

Gene Emrick
Eugene C. Emrick formerly of Richmond, IN passed away on July 17, 2008 at Boswell Hospital in Sun City, AZ. A graduate of Earlham College and a regular on the "Home Folks Party' in Richmond, Gene and his family later moved to California. He started his career with GE which later was bought out by Honeywell. Gene was a manufacturing consultant and traveled the US and Canada. He also was an outstanding organist and played for several churches from California, Texas, Alabama and Arizona. He also played and conducted his own choir in California and recorded an album. He and his wife, Laurel, owned a restaurant in Arizona which was named "Laurel's"; Gene and Laurel both cooked their specialties, real homemade cooking, and on Friday nights Gene would play the piano, you guess the song and get your dinner free, it was a big hit! The choir from Our Lady of Lourdes came into the restaurant after mass one Sunday, heard Gene play and thus Gene became their fulltime organist. He is survived by his wife Laurel, four children, 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He will forever be remembered for his music, his sense of humor, his love for life and church and the gourmet food he so loved to cook and eat.
