Pickering College, where I have been since 1976, is a sister school to Earlham, as is Olney Friends School, where our family shared in the school's life for 20 years. All founded, along with Earlham, as a result of Joseph John Gurney urging Friends in Ohio, Indiana, and Ontario to establish schools for their youth beyond the elementary grades to prepare then for lives of service to their meeting communities. This year Pickering has students from 30 countries in a student body of 400, truely international. Olney, also has a high proportion! I do believe that Friends contribution to education is its major contribution to changing the world. To make a way of life fit our faith -- as we have been allowed to live our days in a school community makes fullness of life and happiness possible - a byproduct - not the goal. Elton T's Philosphy class -- The Summum Bonum! Here my daughter and son-in-law have a Cooperative Shared Agricultural Garden for more than 150 families on our Quaker land farmed by 6 generations since settlement in Upper Canada. It is organic, uses Suffolk horse power, and is building community in the present. We keep in touch with the Bailey's.. ( Cousins whose Suffolks horses pulled wagons in past Earlham May Days!) We contnue to be energy efficient with some solor powered fencing, water heating and lighting..even for the new timberframe, strawbale, clay plastered apprentices' house.. All those materials came from the farm.. and so it goes! Our Quaker meeting community is only 2 hours from Detroit, and not far from Stratford and its Drama Festival.. Tempted? It's all worth a trip. Ernest Wildman, Paul Zavitz' prof., came to look it over and consult about the soil and advise.. and our wheat productivity soon doubled. Earlham has been a wonderful ongoing community. I have so many memories of those teachers who cared and shared.

With so much going on right now, I am just not up to a lengthy class letter this go around. It has been a rather unpleasant summer for us with Gloria more limited in her activities and requiring more care. The whole routine is getting to me and I am feeling stretched and stressed. We have been looking into some assisted living arrangements. We spent a trial period in one facility and found that the experience was not too unpleasant. We are checking out others. It's not what we would prefer but both Gloria and I are admitting that we are at the point of needing help. I will take this opportunity to appeal to those of you who have E Mail to send me your address at kronewitt@att.net. I recently changed e mail carriers and in the process I messed up on transferring a lot of your addresses. I use your e mail to keep you up to date on news of the class as well as any major happenings at the college. We are all getting older so just remember to stay well and stay happy.
