Karola Saekel Craib
Sounds like another Eldon-produced winner. Sorry I missed it - had to be in Europe at that time. I took a buyout last summer (at my age, they were offering to PAY me to get off the payroll!!!!), though I continue to write much the same stuff as before, only now it's free-lance. Anybody interested in my priceless prose - go to http://www.sfgate.com and type in Karola Saekel (NOT Craib).

My husband Tom and I sold our house in Lafayette almost a year ago and moved to a retirement place north of San Francisco. The transition was surprisingly easy! We're enjoying this new life in a real community; particularly the diversity of people and we don't mind living with all these "old folks" among whom we are the youngsters! But their energy and involvement put us to shame! I voted for Hillary and Tom voted for Obama; our son and grandson voted for McCain, and the rest of the family are all over the map! We're looking forward to meeting our first great-grandchild in June. Guess that makes us "old folks" too! Best to all.

We are pleased that our oldest grandchild, Finn Olcott, elected to do early decision at Earlham. We expect to get a lot of vicarious pleasure from that. Otherwise, life is full with ongoing part time employment at the medical school, and raising two year old German shepherds.
Please, everyone, vote your choice in "O" "8"! We have such a great country and it needs all our support.

"Walt & Ro Hadley met with some E.C. folks at Fishermans' Village, Punta Gorda, FL. This gathering coincides with the annual visit by Sam '51 & Alice Weinbaum, (who just celebrated their 50th Anniversary). Also attending were Kay Solt who splits time between Punta Gorda and Illinois, George & Marie Oberle, Sarasota, FL and Preston Smith and his charming friend Maria Saenz-Briones who drove all they way from Fort Lauderdale to join us. Absent, were usual attendees Dudley & Marie Moore '53 and Lewis & Marcie Robbins."

Our 55th reunion came off very well. We had 45 attendees which the Alumni Office said was an excellent turn out for a 55th. The dinner at the Country Club was the high point of the event. It was at the dinner that we really got together as a class and had the place and time to talk and share. Following the dinner, Tom Hamm, the college archivist, gave us a great presentation focusing on our campus time in the fifties. His presentation was full of good (and some not so good) memories, but he made them seem very personal and entertaining. Doug Bennett paid us a visit and all in all we had a very enjoyable and fun evening.
Following dinner, we got a report of our class fund raising (class gift) effort with updates of Esther White Sunderland's Challenge and our goal of establishing a Class of '52 Endowed Scholarship. We exceeded Esther Challenge of $100,000 by a goodly amount. Though all class members' gifts were eligible for Esther's match, not all were designated by the givers for the scholarship. However, according to current reports it is fully expected we will establish a Class of '52 Endowed Scholarship well exceeding $200,000 when our campaign is completed in June, 2009. Just a reminder, if you desire your gifts to be credited to our Scholarship, you must so designate on your check or with a note.
At the dinner, Carol Luckhardt Redfield (Helen Brown and Bob Luckardt's daughter) took pictures of the assembled class. The pictures are quite good and more complete than those taken by the college. Carol has provided me with the disk of the pictures. I will select the best and make it available to those who contribute $15 to the Class Scholarship Fund. If you desire a print, please send me a check made out to Earlham College with a note on the check that it is for the Scholarship Fund. I will bundle the checks and send them to the college. You will receive a receipt documenting your tax deductible gift. I will mail you the print at my expense. I only ask that if you donate to receive a print, that your donation be in addition to whatever gift you have committed or plan to make to the college. This is just an extra boost for our Scholarship.
For Eldon himself. He is as fully as possible recovered from his (or rather his car's) encounter with that tree back in early December. After five weeks in a wheel chair and about five weeks of physical therapy, he has been released with instructions to continue his daily exercises. He still has some residual pain which will take some time (if ever) to heal. The "experts" tell me these "soft tissue" injuries can be as bad in healing as broken bones. Gloria continues to hold her own which pleases all of her doctors but isn't much relief for the aches and pains of her arthritis and limited mobility. She set her goal of getting to the reunion. She did that with great effort and was able to attend the reunion dinner at the country club which she greatly enjoyed.

Any (probably unrealistic) hopes I had of attending, were completely nixed a week or so ago when I had a very serious heart "event."
Technically called "tachyarrhythmia"-- in simple English the heart beating much too fast--took me to the cardiac unit for the implant of a
defibrillator. Now mending, I'm sorry to miss the gathering, but send my very best to everyone. Please do pass my congratulations to all.
(As for my candidate, it's always been a secret ballot). The best to you and all other 52ers.
