Barbara Ruch
On January 23, 2008, the world organization Society for the Promotion of Buddhism (headquarters, Tokyo) announced the selection of Barbara Ruch, Professor Emerita, Columbia University and Director of the Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies, as the 42nd annual winner of their Cultural Award. The prize recognizes Professor Ruch's work over the past decades in resurrecting the lost histories of the Imperial Buddhist Convents of Japan. She is the first woman and the first foreign woman recipient of this prize. It includes an award of 3 million yen and will be presented at a ceremony in Tokyo on March 11.
