Jean Reagan
Four years ago my husband Peter Philips ESR '71, daughter, and I were devastated by the death of our 19-year old son and brother from a drug overdose. Sibling death is often considered the unrecognized grief. I knew there was a need, so I wrote a children’s book (ALWAYS MY BROTHER, Tilbury House Publishers, June 2009), told from the perspective of the surviving sister. This book does not exactly mirror our own family’s story. Yet it does tap into the emotions and experiences of our loss. Jane Yolen (author of OWL MOON) generously blurbed my book: “In a better world, no child would need a book about the death of her brother. But here is a tender, even joyful book about such a tragic event." For the story behind the book, visit http://www.jeanreagan.com. If I only had one book published, this is the book I wanted, because it’s dear to my heart. But, fortunately I just signed a contract with Knopf for my second book, HOW TO BABYSIT A GRANDPA (June 2011). It’s wonderful to send a purely happy, silly book into the world, as well. In October 2009 Peter and I visited Earlham for the first time in over thirty years. We enjoyed wandering the campus and reminiscing about when we met. We were also delighted to see Earlham’s commitment to social justice is as strong as ever. This put smiles on our faces!

Stephanie Crumley-Effinger
60 years after the first member of our family enrolled at Earlham -- my mother Vera Freivogel Crumley '53, in the fall of 1949 -- Michael's and my daughter Mary Crumley-Effinger joins the class of 2013 this fall. Her cousin Sandy Hartmannsgruber '05, sister Anna '07, and brother Max '10 led the way for our third generation of Earlham students. In addition, Mary's cousin Gabe Hartmannsgruber audited a class last spring, an Effinger cousin plans to apply this fall, and another Effinger cousin is considering attending Explore-A-College next summer. If my grandmother Stephanie Freivogel were still alive she would remind us again that she and my grandfather "got all this started" by joining the Religious Society of Friends not long after they emigrated from Austria in 1938 and were helped in their adjustment to America by attending a camp for refugees led by Earlham-related Friends in New York.
