I've have Earlham on my mind these past few weeks... regretting the choice I made to leave at the end of my second year. I would love to go back and do it over again! My path since Earlham has been long and winding: I finished my degree at UC Santa Cruz, then spent nine months sailing in the Caribbean and to Spain. Eventually I landed in Boston, and began a 12 year career as an artist (silk painting, mainly) while also traveling often to Nicaragua and Mexico. In 1986 I moved to Portland, Oregon to be closer to my father and still call this lovely city home. I went to graduate school in Jungian Psychology, finishing in 1993, and worked as a psychotherapist for several years. When the marriage I was in came to an end I also shifted careers, and entered the high tech world-- as a supervisor, manager and trainer. Three years in corporate America was plenty. I met my spouse Toni during this time, and gave birth to a beautiful, healthy boy at the age of 40! I am now happily working as a financial advisor. My office is blocks from my home and I am blessed with a passionate clientele. We are in the process of adopting a sister for Hunter through the State of Oregon. I would love to hear from other Earlhamites and invite anyone passing through Portland to visit.

Twenty-six years on from graduation, I find that my Earlham education has done much to help understand the world in which we live. The understanding ranges from the past to the present and then to the future. As parents, Barb and I support our daughter's various activities. Consequently, we come in contact with numerous young people and their parents. Knowing many of the young people give us increases our hopes for a better future for all humanity; working with the parents lets us know that we share many concerns about the future, particularly for our children and generally for the whole world. Central to these hopes and concerns is the role of education. Almost without exception, youth and parents believe that a good education is a prerequisite to pursuing life goals. The excellence of an Earlham education makes it rise about the 'good' level. I've seen that in the Experiences of my classmates and in those of our children. Earlham certainly deserves our support. I encourage all of us to contribute as we can. I hope our class can unite to achieve a higher participation rate. The Alumni Office has set up web page to make it easy to update your contact information. It is called the Update Form. Having correct information makes it easier for people to stay in contact.

Jim Zwick, 51, an American Studies scholar whose specialties included Mark Twain, political history, and the educational usages of the internet died Thursday (January 24, 2008) at his home outside of Syracuse, New York. With his unique perspective, he provided consultation and commentary for documentary films including Ken Burns' Mark Twain. Living in Hong Kong during the 1970's, his language skills allowed him to travel extensively in the Peoples' Republic of China in 1979, long before the current openness. He later traveled in the Philippines, and was long active with The Friends of the Philipino People. Zwick also served on the Executive Committee of the Mark Twain Circle. Zwick received his BA at Earlham College in 1981 and his MA in Comparative Politics and World History at Syracuse University where he continued to do post-graduate work and teach for some time.
