As I am sure you are aware, last weekend was the 25th reunion and homecoming weekend for our class at Earlham. We had fantastic turnout, especially for a 25th reunion. The Alumni Relations staff tells me that 25th reunions tend to have a light turnout for a variety of reasons. We defied those odds and I have had several staffers tell me they cannot remember as strong a turnout for a 25th as we just had. Many of you who usually attend reunions were not able to be there, but we had several people attend who have never before made a reunion, or who have not been to one for many a long year. Last Saturday night, our reunion giving committee announced that we had raised over $56,000 for our class gift. Exciting news developed from that announcement at our Saturday dinner: several members of our class have teamed up to match donations from those who have not yet made a gift in order to reach our revised reunion gift goal of $75,000. No gift is too small. We really want to increase our class participation rate to 50 percent. Currently, our participation in terms of number of class members who have made a gift of any size sits at a measly 20 percent. That means just 20 percent of us are responsible for that current $56,000 total. Please consider donating a gift of any size, so that we: achieve our goal of increasing our participation percentage to 50 percent, take advantage of this generous matching donation pledge, and reach our revised giving total of $75,000. To make a credit card gift online, please visit: www.earlham.edu/online-giving. To support Earlham with a check, please mail a check payable to “Earlham College” to: Alumni and Development Office Earlham College 801 National Road West Richmond, IN 47374-4095. We have several months left in our giving campaign for us to reach our revised giving total but we want to capitalize right now on this generous matching pledge designed specifically to encourage giving from the 80% of our classmates who have not yet made a donation to Earlham during this specific milestone reunion giving campaign for our class.
Thank you to the Alumni Relations staff at Earlham and to the reunion planning and giving committees for all the work that went into making this reunion a rousing success. For those of you unaware, we have an EC84 Facebook group. Many people have shared reunion comments and memories and, most importantly, posted their photos of the weekend. If you are a member of that group, visit the Facebook page to see the evidence of the fun and fellowship we shared. If you are not yet a member and would like to be, please contact me directly by email so we can sign you up to join that Facebook group. In gratitude for the long friendship we share, Martha

Margot Gillin
Just before my daughter Zoe was born, I got out of Cook County Jail... Where I had been teaching for five years. (A little knownn and sad fact is that Chicago is the home of the worlds largest juvenile jail.) These days I keep busy between teaching, school leadership and working for the union and negotiations team. I hope to see everyone at the 25th reunion, but I will not know until the weekend of the reunion if I will be able to attend. Love to hear from folks.

Colleen Baker
Colleen Baker, Age 47, died December 10, 2008 at St. Vincent Hospice. Colleen was born August 29, 1961 in San Jose, California to parents, William "Bill" and Julia Baker. During her childhood years, Colleen saw quite a lot of the U.S., thanks to her fathers involvement in the Space Industry. Although a shy child, she adapted well to new locations and developed a love for travel. Colleen had lived in Indianapolis since 1977, when she began her high school years at North Central High School. After graduation, she attended Earlham College, graduating in 1984. She worked at the Holcombe Institute for several years before joining Nature Preserves, a division of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. She was a member of CILTI and the Indianapolis Shell Club. Colleen never lost that innocent curiosity with which children are blessed. Thanks to this, her interests ranged far and wide. Although a somewhat reticent person, she would at times surprise us all by sharing some of the minutest details of a miscellany of subjects which had piqued her interest. Her mind was a storehouse of amazing things! Although Colleen enjoyed visiting museums and historic locations as she traveled in England or this country, she much preferred the countryside to large cities. To be by, or on, a large body of water, preferably in rough weather; to walk in the woods and fields and watch the birds; to sit quietly and listen to the wind and waves: any one of these was heaven to her! Her love of nature, in all its forms, influenced her artwork and her approach to life. In addition to her parents, Colleen is survived by: grandmother Irene Baker of Traverse City, MI; brother and s-i-l, Chris and Tracy Baker, with children Isabel and Nicolas Baker and Christopher Todd, of Indianapolis; sister and b-i-l Kelly and Gary D. Kwolek, with children Brittany, Andrew and Jeremy Kwolek, of Culpeper VA; aunt Patricia Taylor, Lincoln England and cousins Jacqueline Henderson, Yeovil England and Kathryn Duffy, Coventry England. Even during her many years of illness and pain, Colleen remained a gentle, sweet-natured person, with a quirky sense of humor and optimistic outlook. In spite of what life threw at her, she seldom complained. She was an inspiration to both family and friends, and will be sadly missed by all.
