I am still living in Brooklyn, New York, and loving my work as a lawyer bringing civil rights actions on behalf of wrongly convicted individuals with the firm of Cochran, Neufeld & Scheck. David Weinberg '00 and I frequently hang out with an ever-growing band of merry Earlhamite New Yorkers, which was most recently joined by Jesse Davison, back from his travels (and wedding!) abroad. Jesse writes, "Since leaving EC I learned how to breathe fire in Scotland, walked 500 miles across Spain (mainly on the plain), survived gastroenteritis and rode elephants in Thailand, pet cheetahs and danced with the Masai in southern Africa, met and married the love of my life, and have finally returned to the US, and become a sous chef at Soho House NYC." I look forward to seeing folks back at Earlham at our (gulp!) 10-year reunion in '09!

I've been quite busy since the summer when I got hired for my first classroom teaching position (3rd grade) and got engaged to my boyfriend of 4 years, Matt McGuan. We still live happily in Juneau, Alaska. Despite its isolation and crummy fall weather, we love it here. The long summer days and close proximity to nature make up for the cold, dark, and rain. We hope to make Juneau our permanent home. We enjoy hockey, downhill skiing, and snowshoeing in the winter and boating, hiking, and camping in the summer. As the capital, Juneau is also very political and cultural, which we also enjoy. We can show anyone planning to visit a real good time!

Abby Williamson
Abby Williamson and Matthew Young continue to live in Austin, Texas. Abby works in fundraising and communications for a local nonprofit healthcare clinic (http://www.austinpcc.org) and chairs the Austin chapter of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (http://www.ynpn.org/austin). Matthew has his own remodeling business, but that's a front for his art-making. His greatest artistic joys are modern and improvisational dance and photography. Check out his website, designed by fellow alum, Chris Hardie to see his latest works: http://www.dancingcarpenter.com. We're planning a June, 2008 trip to Buenos Aires and wonder if there are any alumni there? Be in touch!

Just wanted to send out an update now that life changes have been made. Ethan Moitra (University of Virginia Alum) and I were married on November 10th, 2007. Jeremy Nickel officiated the ceremony at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue in Philadelphia. It was fabulous to have lots of Earhamites as participants in our ceremony and reception. We will travel to Argentina and Uruguay for our March/April 2008 honeymoon. I continue to work as a researcher at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia while Ethan completes his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. We love living in this great city and would love to hear from any Earlhamites who might be passing through or who also live in the area!

Erik Tillema
Erik Tillema majored in history while at Earlham. Following graduation in 1999, he returned to his home town of Madison, WI and took a job teaching troubled, displaced teens in a local alternative charter school. Erik discovered that he had special talents, not only in relating well with young people but also in making mathematics (and other subjects) interesting and accessible, in this case to students who had little academic grounding or spark for learning. After several years of high school teaching, Erik decided to begin graduate school in math education at the University of Georgia Athens. He developed a special interest in human cognitive development and its relationship to the learning process. His dissertation research focused on the learning patterns of middle school students in the development of mathematical concepts. Erik received his PhD degree in August, 2007. In the autumn of ’07, he began teaching as an Assistant Professor at Indiana University (IU) School of Education at IUPUI (Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis). After his first semester of teaching elementary education undergraduate majors, one of his young male students nominated Erik to receive a “favorite professor” award. Acknowledging his early success in his chosen career, the award will be presented during the half-time ceremony at an upcoming IUPUI basketball game. Erik lives in Bloomington, Indiana with his wife, Amy Hackenberg, who is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at IU Bloomington.
