Greetings Classmates! It is hard to image we have been out as long as we have! I personally have had a lot of change in my life over the last couple of months. I moved to Norfolk, Virginia to take a job at Eastern Virginia Medical School. I am enjoying settling in to a new climate and setting. Sadly I do not notice as many "earlhamites" here as in Richmond, so please if you are in the area, drop me a line!

After graduation I went straight into my Masters in Library Science degree at the University of Maryland, which I successfully completed this May. I started at the end of August as a Contract Archivist at the Smithsonian, conducting an inventory of frozen samples across the Institution. I am excited about this opportunity, and am happy to be staying in the DC area for another year!

Jennifer Silver
After graduating in 2007 I returned to Champaign-Urbana, IL to work, but after a short time there I decided I needed to do something more with my life. I found that the US Army was the opportunity I had been waiting for. I signed in April of 2009 and have been involved in extensive training ever since! Most recently, I have been placed at Fort Benning, GA to complete the necessary training to become an Officer. I branched Military Police, and look forward to moving to Fort Leonardwood after I complete the basic officer course in late October.

Helen Schweitz
I am presently living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I am a 1L at the University of Michigan Law School. I have just finished briefing my first two cases! After graduation from EC I interned at the Chicago History Museum for the summer and then went to work at a property management office for a 200,000+ square foot commercial building in the Chicago suburbs. I left my position in May of this year, at which point I visited a farm in Washington State for two weeks. There I learned how to milk goats, massaged cheese, planted onions, ate cow tongue, re-learned how to ride a horse, and promptly fell off one due to a miscommunication involving the reins. The rest of my summer has been spent waiting for law school to begin.

While my primary job is a dispatcher for the city, I also am a lifeguard & swim instructor for the local YMCA. I am still continuing to volunteer for the local Special Olympics Program! My most recent investment is my new 07 Malibu Maxx!!! I love my life!

Matthew Hogan
I am now a research and teaching assistant at the University of Massachusetts (Dartmouth), working on aspects of loop quantum cosmology and loop quantum gravity, which are gradually replacing string theory as the most likely candidate for a Theory of Everything, the holy grail of physics. This includes work on a supercomputer built from 16 Playstation 3s.
I also continue to produce music for a number of artists, recently including V8 (and his TornFormDrawing crew), whom Rolling Stone just called the "best rapper in Chicago." I'm steadily working on my debut album as well; more information can be found at http://www.myspace.com/twistor.

Scott Heerman
I am happily living in Washington, DC working on my doctoral study. I am increasingly looking at issues of race, slavery, and American
nationalism during the later half of the eighteenth century. I am immersing myself in the colonial world and loving it entirely.

"I am not doing much. Well, it feels like not doing much. Working for the last two years at Roche, it's into the phase that college doesn't feel like it was yesterday. In addition to working at Roche I do a little teaching at Francis Marion University (Chemistry labs)."

Elissa Newton
I'm living in the most amazing part of downtown Portland, OR (NW), recently unemployed so I'm spending my days volunteering at the Oregon
Humane Society adopting out kitties to good families. My boyfriend and I are celebrating our 4 month anniversary in 12 days and he amazingly
supports my aspirations for grad school. One last thing, my favorite magazine is Mental Floss!

Anna Kathryn Myers Best
After graduating from Earlham, I worked as an environmental science consultant at S&ME, Inc. for 1 1/2 years. It turns out that this career is not a good fit for me, but I will happily recommend S&ME to anyone interested in working for a geotechnical engineering, environmental remediation, and construction services firm in Richmond, Virginia. Due to economic struggles within the company, I was laid off in October.
It was a blessing in disguise. Now I have a lot less frustration in my life, and a great deal more time and spiritual energy for personal discernment. I am much happier now, though a bit strapped for cash. I've been working part-time at Barnes & Noble here in Richmond. I love this job!
My discernment has focused on my vocation, my purpose on this earth. I've entertained fantasies of everything from carpentry to medical school, from delving deeper into geology to switching focus to sustainable architecture. My not-so-secret dream is to build my own natural, sustainable, net-zero energy home in community someday.
Even though I love working part-time with low wages for Barnes & Noble, I received an even better offer. I'm moving to Skagway, Alaska for a long summer of leading bicycle tours. I have very little idea of what to expect, but it will be a wonderful adventure! The adventure will continue when I finish in September, since I have no solid plans for employment. I have no doubt that my blessings will continue, and Way will Open.
