Earlham College Athletics 1920-1929

This collection depicts the teams and facilities of Earlham College from 1920 to 1929.  Included are photographs which accurately represent the attitudes and traditions of Earlham's sports teams and the gradual expansion of the college's sports facilities. The decade of the 1920's was chosen because of the large number of photographs available and many construction projects on-campus during that period.

Campus Buildings

This collection includes images of Earlham College Campus buildings, past and present. It currently documents the history of Earlham Hall, including the demolition of the original structure and construction of the new hall. Only a small portion of available images are included. Images were selected based on the photographer, subject matter, image quality, and depictions of important events such as campus events. Aerial images of the campus from the 1920's-1970's are also included. Many aerial images document campus construction projects and show areas of the surrounding city of Richmond.

Early Earlham

This collection is a selection of some of the earliest images in the archives. It depicts thirty years of student life at Earlham between 1860 and 1890. Between six and twelve images were chosen for each decade in order to show the most diversity in subject matter. The collection is meant to show the evolving nature of Earlham College campus.

May Day

This collection features various photographs pertaining to the events of May Day. The collection consists of a variety of the earliest photographs housed at the Earlham Friends Archives. Originating mostly from personal albums and school memorabilia the photographs are meant to give a cursory glimpse at the evolving characters and performances over time. It begins with information on the first May Day in 1865 and highlights the originators of reoccurring themes that are featured throughout the coming years. Characters such as the May Queen, Robin Hood, Shepherdesses, Milk Maids, Gypsies, etc… The event began as a very private affair but blossomed into a campus wide activity involving both students, faculty and, at times, locals. The practice has since ended at Earlham so the creation of an online source will provide the easiest access for those interested to get an understanding of what May Day meant to those at Earlham.

Musicians at Earlham

This collection is a series of photographs taken between 1950 and 1990, the majority of them spanning the years between 1960 and 1970. The subjects include students, faculty, and occasional outside performers. All of the photographs were taken on the Earlham campus, and each photograph includes at least one human subject. Since people, and more specifically, people in a musical context, are the main focus of this collection, Music at Earlham is meant to give the outside viewer a glimpse into both the musical lives of Earlham students, and past student life in general.
