Tom Hamm spoke at three Quaker events over the summer. In June, he delivered the George Richardson Memorial Lecture at Woodbrooke, the Quaker study centre in Birmingham, England. His topic was Chipping at the Landmarks of the Fathers: The Transformation of the Quaker Testimony against Hireling Ministry in the Nineteenth Century. In July he led a workshop on its history at the Triennial sessions of Friends United Meeting in High Point, N.C. Also in July he gave the Quaker Lecture as part of the sesquicentennial celebration for Western Yearly Meeting of Friends.
Kathy Milar was elected executive officer of Cheiron, the International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences, at the 40th annual meeting at Ryerson University in Toronto. The co-conveners of New Student Orientation are deeply grateful to the many people and offices around campus that, as a team, helped to make orientation possible. Putting together orientation is like the production of a symphony; each sections performance is critical to the whole. On every floor of every building there are a multitude of individuals who made significant contributions to the success of orientation. No doubt there are many unsung heroes who went out of their way quietly and without fanfare to go beyond the call of duty to help one of our new students and/or their families. Without each and every member of the Earlham College community, New Student Orientation could not be performed. We thank you for all that you have given and will continue to give so that we can be our very best.
Many thanks to the many students who worked hard to plan and carry out New Student Orientation. Your efforts and energy are deeply appreciated.
Thanks go to Bill Harvey, Amy Mulnix and Earlham Science departments for donating science equipment for use in Richmond State Hospital science classrooms. Dick Holden, currently a science teacher at Richmond State Hospital, thanks the department for donating eight microscopes and Petri dish supplies.

Do you want to impact college governance? Earlham Student Government offers open committee positions. A list of openings and applications are available on the ESG board in the mailroom. Application deadline is Tues., Feb. 12. Contact: esg@earlham.edu .
Currently there are two positions available on the Student Faculty Affairs Committee. This student committee works with faculty committees and the president in interviews of prospective faculty and reviews of faculty before they achieve tenure. The committee is intense and requires membership continuity. For this reason we hope that members will serve for three or more semesters (not necessarily consecutively). The time commitment is at least 20 hours a semester and may be more during heavy semesters.
Student Government elections are upon us. There are open positions in Student Executive Council (SEC), Student Activities Board (SAB), Student Organization Council (SOC) and Secretary of Finance. If you are interested in running for the SEC, gather a potential cabinet of four members (2 Co-Presidents and 2 Vice-Presidents) and notify ESG soon. If you are interested in running for any other position, SAB, SOC, or Secretary of Finance just ask ESG about a petition. Were here to answer questions about elections and election procedures. Contact: esg@earlham.edu .
