Grief is unique in its impact, course and meaning to each of us. While every change brings about a loss, experiencing the death of someone with whom we share history often has special meaning to us and hits us even harder. We tend to think only of the emotional reactions. Yet, people also experience physical and behavioral reactions. The intensity of grief changes over time and through personal growth as we strive for a new normal without the special person in our lives. Everyone's reactions and grief are different. Whatever you feel is “normal” and the intensity will ease with time. Try to maintain your normal routine, share memories with family and friends, and laugh. Humor is a wonderful healer. For the past two years, the Colombian army forces have been killing young people recruited in the cities with the promise of jobs, only to kill them, claiming that they are guerrilla members.
A panic or anxiety attack is a sudden surge of overwhelming anxiety and fear. Your heart pounds and you cant breathe. You feel dizzy and sick to your stomach. You may even feel like you’re dying or going crazy. In many cases, panic attacks strike out of the blue, without any warning. Fear of recurrence can itself trigger a panic attack. If you experience a panic attack, try to control your breathing with slow, deep breaths; avoid smoking and caffeine to help prevent future attacks; use relaxation techniques to stop and prevent attacks; learn as much as you can about panic so you can use self-talk to calm yourself down and remind yourself that the symptoms you’re feeling are normal and you aren’t going crazy or dying. A recent article in Newsweek points out that happiness is, at best, fleeting, yet today's society has made happiness the emotional standard. If you are not happy all the time, the article says, then you must have an illness and need medication. Life’s circumstances do not support a constant state of happiness, however, and experiencing negative emotions from time to time allows for personal growth and a greater enjoyment of those brief periods of true happiness. Please note, however, that this is different from major depressive disorder, an illness which can and should be treated. The negative emotions can motivate us to make changes in our lives for the better. Happiness - life satisfaction - can come from knowing others, achieving goals, and doing things, especially for others.
