INDOOR TRACK and FIELD
at NCAC Indoor Championships
WOMEN: 7th of 9; MEN: 10th

GRANVILLE, Ohio--The men's and women's track teams competed in the NCAC Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday. The women paced the way scoring 29 points and finishing seventh, while the men scored nine points to finish tenth.

On the women's side, first-year runner Tashi Johnson (Bloomington, IN/South) scored in two events. She finished third in the 55-meter dash stopping the clock at 7.47seconds and fifth in the 200 meters in 26.77 seconds. Distance runner Emily Ralph (Greencastle, IN/Greencastle) finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:46.30. Ralph also finished seventh in the 3,000 meter run. Sophomore thrower Carmen Batts-Porter (Indianapolis, IN/Cardinal Ritter) finished third in the shot put marking 37' 4 1/4".

On the men's side, first-year hurdler Tim Herrod (Gary, IN/Roosevelt) finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.23 seconds. The men's distance medley relay team of Matt Lindeman (Coronado, CA/Bishop's), Greg Sandstrom (Leesburg, VA/Loudan County), J.P. Gary (Riverside, IL/Riverside-Brookfield), and Glenn Mutti (Grinnell, IA/Grinnell) finished fifth with a time of 11:09.70. Andy Graham (Hiram, OH/Mogadore) ran a time of 9:06.80 to finish eighth in the 3,000-meter run.

The track teams will return to action on Friday, March 9 at Ohio Northern.

BASEBALL
Earlham 2, at Cumberland 1
at Cumberland 4, Earlham 3

WILLIAMSBURG, Kentucky--The Earlham College baseball team opened the 2002 season at Cumberland College. The Quakers split the double header, winning game one 2-1 and losing the second game of the series 4-3 on Saturday.

In game one, junior Brad Cole (Bloomington, IN/North) broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the top half of the seventh inning to give the Quakers their first win of the 2002 season. Earlham's first run came on an RBI double by junior Adam Fowler (Dayton, OH/Carroll). Sophomore pitcher David Luptak (Munster, IN/Munster) threw a complete game and earned the win on the mound.

In game two of the double header Earlham was defeated 4-3 by Cumberland College. Junior Josh Amyx (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and sophomore Allan Campbell (Hagerstown, IN/Hagerstown) connected for RBI singles. First-year second baseman Kevin Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) went three for four from the plate. Senior Michael Faile (Fairview Park, OH/Fairview), Carr, and Amyx each accounted for Earlham's three runs. First-year pitcher Lucas Troutwine (Arcanum, OH/Arcanum) fell to 0-1 on the year getting the loss on the mound.

Earlham, 1-1 overall, will continue its 2002 campaign Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10, as they host Oberlin College for a North Coast Athletic Conference double header on Saturday and Centre College (KY) in a non-conference double header on Sunday.

MEN'S TENNIS
EARLHAM 7, MANCHESTER 0

RICHMOND, Indiana--The Earlham College men's tennis team swept Manchester College 7-0 in a non-conference match on Saturday. The Quakers even their over record to 3-3.

Earlham won all three double matches to claim the doubles point. At number two doubles first-year player Chuck DiLalla (Cleveland Heights, OH/Cleveland Heights) and Casey Kroh (Fort Wayne, IN/Canterberry) trailed 6-3 before winning five straight sets to claim the 8-6 win. The Quakers won at number one and three doubles 8-4 and 8-3 respectively.

"We had a slow start at doubles, but were able to gain the momentum going into the singles matches," said head coach John Ross. "It was a good win for us."

At number one singles junior Adam Turner (Richmond, IN/Richmond) defeated Tim Flory, 6-0 and 6-2. At number two singles Justin Carrier (Voorheesville, NY/Bouton) defeated Ryan Lindstrom 6-4, 6-2, while first-year player Nick Schuller (Lincoln, MA/Concord Academy) defeated Tim Robinson at number four singles by the same score. At number six singles sophomore Tyler McClave (Dennison, OH/Claymont) defeated Manchester's Jay Jewell 6-2, 6-2.

Earlham, 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the North Coast Athletic conference will continue non-conference play on Sunday as they host IUPU-Fort Wayne. The men's match will start at 4:00 p.m following the women's match at 1:00 p.m.
