Quakers Split Doubleheader to Start Season

DANVILLE, Ky. — The Earlham College baseball team split a pair of contests on Saturday
with Taylor University to begin the 2006 season.
Taylor won 5-1 in the opener, while the Quakers
took the second game 7-4. Both games were at Centre College. “We showed some
enthusiasm and we played a lot of people,” Earlham coach Tom
Parkevich said. “We are way ahead of where we were a year ago
at this time. We showed that we can play and that’s exciting.
There is something special about this group.”
Earlham started the second game with four runs in the first inning.
Junior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond) scored on a balk and
then first-year Ben Marschand (Galveston, IN/ Lewis Cass) walked
with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. The Quakers added two more
runs on an error to take a 4-0 lead.
Taylor (1-3) scored a run in the second, but the Quakers
(1-1) responded with another tally in the bottom of the frame on
a run-scoring single
by senior Derreck Parkevich (Logansport, IN/Logansport).
After Taylor put three runs on the scoreboard in the third to cut
the deficit to 5-4, Earlham scored its final two runs in the bottom
of the inning. Earlham scored on an error and the Marshand knocked
in the other run with a double.
Parkevich (1-0) worked four innings for the Quakers to pick up the
win giving up four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. First-year
Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) earned the initial
save of his college career with three scoreless innings with three
strikeouts.
In the opener, Earlham scored on a single by junior Kyle Bond (Ft.
Wayne, IN/Homestead) to lead 1-0 in the second inning. Taylor added
a run in its half of the second to tie the contest and then the Trojans
scored twice in the third to go in front to stay. They pushed across
two more runs in the sixth.
Sophomore Eric Sturgeon (0-1) (Logansport, IN/Logansport) suffered
the loss giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts
in four innings. First-year Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport)
worked the final two innings for the Quakers.
First-year Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/ Pendleton Heights) led the
Quakers with two hits including a double.
Earlham returns to action next Saturday with a doubleheader
at Principia College. The first game starts at 1 p.m. Game
One Box. Game Two Box.
