Quakers Split Another Doubleheader on the Road

ELSAH, Ill. — Good pitching highlighted the afternoon for the Earlham College baseball team on Saturday as the Quakers spilt a doubleheader at Principia College.

Earlham won the first game 8-1 before dropping the second contest 4-3. “It was a nice win,” Earlham coach Tom Parkevich said of the opener. “Derreck Parkevich had a solid outing and (sophomore) Corey Gareri closed it out. Overall, there was pretty good pitching from our staff.”

Senior Derreck Parkevich (Logansport, IN/Logansport), who had two hits in the first game, supplied some power for the offense with a solo homer that gave the Quakers a 2-1 lead in the third inning. On the mound, Derreck Parkevich (2-0) worked five innings giving up one run on one hit with five strikeouts. Gareri (Thorntown, IN/Western Boone) went the final two innings surrendering one hit.

A five-run fourth inning gave the Quakers an insurmountable 7-1 edge as first-year Cal Wilson knocked in two runs in the frame. First-year On Richardson (Connersville, IN/ Connersville) had two hits for the Quakers.

In game two, Principia scored the winning run in the sixth inning against first-year pitcher Randy Kerns (0-1). Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) went the last two innings, giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts. First-year starter Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) pitched four innings, surrendering three unearned runs on four hits, while striking out four.

Junior Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) and sophomore Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) had three hits each for the Quakers. Bond tied the game at 1-1 with a single in the second. Principia took a 2-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the second.

In the fourth, junior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie) knocked in a run with a ground out to tie the contest at 2-2. Principia went in front again with another tally in the bottom of the inning.

Bond tied the game again in the fifth when he scored on a passed ball before the Panthers scored the game-winner in the next inning.

Earlham (2-2) entertains Mount St. Joseph on Tuesday. The game is set for 5 p.m. at McBride Stadium. Game One Box. Game Two Box.
