Quakers Play Home Opener at McBride Stadium
For Immediate Release:
March 7, 2006
RICHMOND, Ind. — One inning proved to be the difference Tuesday as the Earlham College
baseball team opened the home portion of its schedule on a chilly
evening at McBride Stadium.
The College of Mount St. Joseph defeated the
Quakers 7-1. “We
played pretty well for eight innings and we got some good pitching,” Earlham
College coach Tom Parkevich said. “We just had one bad inning.”
Earlham led 1-0 heading into the top of the fifth
as sophomore starter Corey Gareri (Thorntown, IN/Western Boone) was
cruising along. Mount
St. Joseph (4-0) began the frame with two hits followed by an error,
which started a five-run rally. Gareri (0-1) went four innings, giving
up five runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
The Quakers (2-3) couldn’t recover and
surrendered a pair of runs in the eighth for the final runs of
the contest.
First-year Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) worked
out of the fifth and completed two more scoreless innings before
giving way to senior Andy Krickenbarger (Arcanum, OH/Arcanum), who
pitched the eighth. First-year Kevin Greve (Farmersburg, IN/ North
Central) wrapped up the game in the ninth.
As a group, the relievers hurled five innings allowing two runs
on three hits with three strikeouts.
Earlham scored its run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by junior
Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead).
Junior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New
Prairie), sophomore Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) and
first-year Danny Bridge
(Logansport, IN/ Lewis Cass) had Earlham’s hits.
Earlham is back at McBride Stadium on Saturday
for a doubleheader against Oberlin College. Since Oberlin is in
the East Division of
the North Coast Athletic Conference, the games are non-league. The
first contest gets underway at 1 p.m. Box score.
