Quakers Start Spring Trip to Florida

FT. PIERCE, Fla. — The Earlham College baseball team had a rough start on Saturday to its spring trip in Florida.

The Quakers fell 12-5 to Delaware Valley College in the morning and then dropped a 12-3 decision to Kenyon College in the afternoon.

Junior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie) knocked in a run to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener. Over the next four frames, Delaware Valley worked its way to a 5-1 advantage.

Senior Derreck Parkevich (Logansport, IN/Logansport) highlighted Earlham’s three-run fifth with a single that scored two runs as the Quakers closed the cap to 5-4.

Delaware Valley’s seven-run sixth put the game out of reach. First-year Craig Lewis (Farmersburg, IN/ North Central) added a solo homer in the eighth for Earlham’s final score of the contest.

Sophomore Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) took the loss. Sturgeon (0-2) worked five innings giving up five runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Against Kenyon, the Quakers took a 3-0 lead in the second inning with two unearned runs and a walk to junior Brenton Robinson (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) with the bases loaded.

Kenyon tied the game with three runs in the fifth and then took command in the seventh with five runs.

Parkevich started on the mound for the Quakers and left with the score tied 3-3. First-year Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) suffered the loss and is 0-1 after giving up five runs.

The Quakers (2-5) return to action against Principia College on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
