For Immediate Release:
March 19, 2006

FT. PIERCE, Fla. — There was an offensive explosion by the Earlham College baseball team Sunday as the Quakers posted their first win during the spring trip in Florida.

The Quakers defeated Principia 20-5 in seven innings as sophomore pitcher Corey Gareri (Thorntown, IN/Western Boone) earned his first collegiate victory.

A 12-run first inning on Sunday gave the Quakers a boost after two losses on Saturday. “It was good and just what we needed,” Earlham coach Tom Parkevich said. “We got much better and had a lot of things go our way. We also got some good pitching and our bats came alive as we took advantage of some opportunities.”

Earlham sent 15 batters to the plate in the first as the Quakers had six hits including a two-run homer by senior Derreck Parkevich (Logansport, IN/Logansport). Derreck Parkevich added a run-scoring single later in the inning as the Quakers went ahead 12-0.

Principia scored two runs in its half of the first to make it 12-2, but the Quakers added another run in the second.

In the third, the Quakers went up 16-2 as first-year Drew Hosier (Gas City, IN/ Mississinewa) and junior Brenton Robinson (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) highlighted the frame with RBI singles. Principia put another run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning to make it 16-3.

Earlham didn’t slow down as the Quakers scored three more time in the fourth. First-year Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/ Pendleton Heights) had a run-scoring single, while junior Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) produced a run with a sacrifice fly. First-year Tilmon Clark (Winchester, IN/ Winchester) knocked in run with a ground out.

After Principia scored in the bottom of the fourth, the Quakers add their final run of the contest in the fifth thanks to an error.

Derreck Parkevich and junior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie) finished with three hits each, while Wilson and Bond had two apiece.

Gareri (1-1) went five innings giving up five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Only two of the runs were earned. Hosier and first-year Craig Lewis (Farmersburg, IN/ North Central) each worked a scoreless inning to finish the game.

The 20 runs were the most scored by Earlham since the Quakers beat Fredonia State 19-2 on March 20, 2004. The last time Earlham had at least 20 runs was in a 21-2 victory over Hilbert College on March 22, 2000. Both games were part of spring break trips to Florida.

Earlham (3-5) continues play in Florida on Monday as the Quakers face SUNY New Paltz in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. Box Score.
