For Immediate Release:
March 21, 2006
FT. PIERCE, Fla. — For
the second time in three days, the Earlham College baseball team
scored 20 runs against Principia College.
Earlham pounded the Panthers 20-7 on Tuesday
afternoon after the Quakers beat them 20-5 on Sunday. “It was a good win,” Earlham
coach Tom Parkevich said. “We also got pretty good pitching
and we didn’t walk anyone.”
The Quakers started early with a five-run first inning. Senior Derreck
Parkevich (Logansport, IN/Logansport) knocked a pair of runs with
a triple and then scored after a Principia error to make it 3-0.
Junior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie) added a run-scoring
double and first-year Drew Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississinewa) follow
with a RBI single.
Principia fought back with three runs in the
top of the third, but the Quakers responded. “They made it 5-3 and then we put some
distance between us,” Tom Parkevich said. “I want us
to be able to play aggressively with a lead and not just hold on.”
The Quakers did exactly what their coach wanted as they scored six
times in the bottom of the third to take command.
Junior Brenton Robinson (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) walked
with the bases loaded to make it 6-3. Junior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond,
IN/Richmond) produced a run with a single and one batter later Derreck
Parkevich banged a single that added two more runs to make 11-3.
Principia made it 11-4 in the fourth, but Colanese singled in a
run to make it 12-4 in the bottom of the inning.
Earlham scored five more in the fifth as the Quakers scored two
runs on an error and a wild pitch before Robinson walked with the
bases loaded for the second time in the contest. First-year Cal Wilson
(Pendleton, IN/ Pendleton Heights) and Gallagher followed with RBI
hits.
A three-run sixth finished off the scoring for the Quakers. Colanese
had a RBI double and then junior Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead)
brought home the final pair of runs with a double.
Principia scored three unearned runs in the seventh against senior
Andy Krickenbarger (Arcanum, OH/Arcanum), who picked up the victory.
Krickenbarger (1-0) worked the last four innings giving up four runs
on six hits. First-year Craig Lewis (Farmersburg, IN/ North Central)
started and went the first three frames surrendering three runs on
six hits.
Wilson led Earlham with four hits, while Colanese had three.
Earlham (5-6) ends its Florida spring trip today
with a doubleheader against Grinnell College. The opener is scheduled
for 3 p.m. Box Score.
