Quakers Split Doubleheader With Grinnell;
Bring Home Friendship Trophy
For Immediate Release:
March 22, 2006
FT. PIERCE, Fla. — There will be an extra piece of luggage on the airplane as the Earlham
College baseball returns from a spring trip to Florida on Friday.
The Quakers (6-7) ended the visit to the Sunshine State as the split
a doubleheader with Grinnell College on Wednesday. Earlham
dropped
the first
contest 4-1 and then took the second contest by the same score.
With the win, the Quakers reclaim the Friendship Trophy from Grinnell. “We
lost it last year and now we’ve got it back,” Earlham
coach Tom Parkevich said. The hardware represents the relationship
between Parkevich and Grinnell coach Tim Hollibaugh, who have known
each other since childhood. The two teams play each year in Florida.
Senior Derreck Parkevich (Logansport, IN/Logansport) went the distance
in the win raising his record to 3-0, while giving up one run on
three hits with seven strikeouts. “Derreck threw an outstanding
game,” Tom
Parkevich said.
Earlham scored an unearned run in the first and Grinnell tied the
game in the top of the fourth.
In the sixth, Earlham took the lead for good when sophomore Eric
Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) made it 2-1 with a run-scoring
single.
Later in the frame, the Quakers added two more runs on a throwing
error.
Junior Brenton Robinson (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) was attempting
to steal third with junior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
swiping second. Grinnell catcher Mark Wilcox tossed the ball into
left field trying to make a play on Robinson allowing both runners
to cross home plate.
Gallagher, Wilson and Sturgeon had the only hits for the Quakers.
All of the runs in the opener were scored in the first inning. Earlham
scored when first-year Craig Lewis (Farmersburg, IN/ North Central)
knocked a run in after grounding into a double play with the bases
loaded.
Grinnell put its four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the
inning against Sturgeon
(0-3). Sturgeon tossed a complete game surrendering
four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
The Quakers threatened on several occasions, but couldn’t produce
a run. "On the downside, we left seven men on base," Tom Parkevich
said. “Every time we got something going, it was with two outs.”
Junior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie) led the Quakers
with two hits.
Earlham is back in action this weekend as the Quakers play doubleheaders
at North Coast Athletic Conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University on
Sunday and Monday. The first game each day starts at 1 p.m. The contests
were originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but weather conditions
have moved them back one day.
Game One Box Score. Game Two Box Score.
