For Immediate Release:
April 6, 2006
RICHMOND, Ind. — Four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning had the Earlham College
baseball team celebrating on Thursday as the Quakers posted a 10-9
comeback victory over Franklin College at McBride Stadium.
First-year Craig Lewis (Farmersburg, IN/North
Central) completed the game-winning rally with a bases loaded single. “It’s
nice for the players,” Earlham coach Tom Parkevich said. “The
guys deserve to feel good about themselves and it’s a great
win. We beat a pretty good team because the players didn’t
quit.”
Junior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond) started the ninth
inning with a single. One out later, senior Derreck Parkevich (Logansport,
IN/Logansport) and first-year Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/ Pendleton
Heights) walked to fill the bases.
Sophomore Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) followed with
his fourth hit of the game to make it 9-7.
Prior to junior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie) coming
to the plate with a chance to tie the game, Tom Parkevich inserted
sophomore Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) as a pinch runner
at second base for Wilson. Colanese banged a single to center to
make it a 9-9 contest.
After junior Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead)
loaded the bases again with an infield single, Lewis dug into the
batter’s box
for his heroic moment.
Senior pitcher Andy Krickenbarger (Arcanum,
OH/Arcanum) came into the game with one out in the seventh and
finished the contest to
earn the win. Krickenbarger (2-0) gave up one run on three hits. “I
was proud of Andy,” Tom Parkevich said.
After missing some early opportunities to score, Earlham took a
1-0 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Lewis.
Franklin (11-10) put two runs on the scoreboard in the fifth against
Earlham starter Derreck Parkevich. The Grizzlies added three runs
in the in the sixth and three more in the seventh to lead 8-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Quakers started the road
back with five runs. Derreck Parkevich had a run-scoring single to
make it 8-2. Wilson followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-3.
Sturgeon delivered the big blow of the frame with a three-run homer
to make it 8-6.
The Quakers surrendered a run in the top of the ninth to set the
stage for the four-run rally. Bond had three hits for the Quakers,
while Colanese and Lewis had two hits each.
Earlham (7-16) returns to action at Wilmington College on April
