Quakers Face Denison in NCAC Series

GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Earlham
College baseball team finally played on Saturday after rain washed
out Friday’s
action in the North Coast Athletic Conference 4-game series at
Denison University.
The Quakers dropped the completion of Friday’s suspended game
14-4 before falling 19-6 and 13-4 in the regularly scheduled doubleheader.
Friday’s second game is now set for Tuesday in Granville with
a 6 p.m. start.
On Friday, the Quakers trailed 5-0 before they rallied with four
runs in the third inning. First-year Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/ Pendleton
Heights) knocked in a pair of runs with a single. Senior Derreck
Parkevich (Logansport, IN/Logansport) scored on a passed ball before
junior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie) banged a run-scoring
triple to make it 5-4.
Before the rains came, Denison scored seven times to take a 12-4
lead. The Big Red added a pair of runs on Saturday for the final
scores of the game.
Sophomore Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) led the Quakers
with three hits, while Wilson added two hits. Parkevich (3-3), who
pitched on Friday, suffered the loss.
Earlham began the opener of the doubleheader with two runs in the
first inning as Parkevich and junior Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead)
pounded RBI doubles.
Denison (18-12, 6-5 in the NCAC West) scored 16 times over the next
four frames to put the game away.
Parkevich added a RBI double in the fifth for another run for the
Quakers. In the seventh, Earlham added three runs. Parkevich picked
up his third run-scoring double of the contest. Wilson and Bond finished
the rally with RBI singles.
Junior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond), Wilson and Bond had
two hits each for Earlham. First-year Randy Kerns (West Manchester,
OH/National Trail) left the mound with one out in the third inning
and got the loss to fall to 1-2.
The Quakers started the second game of the doubleheader with two
runs in their first at-bat as Colanese knocked in both runners with
a triple. Denison, however, responded with five runs in the bottom
of the first to take a 5-2 lead.
Earlham closed the gap to 5-4 with two runs in the third. Parkevich
and Wilson highlighted the framed with RBI doubles. The Big Red put
the contest out of reach with two runs in the third and six more
in the fifth.
Parkevich and Wilson led Earlham with two hits apiece. First-year
Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) pitched five innings for
the Quakers and was handed his sixth loss in as many decisions.
Earlham (7-20, 0-11) return to action on Tuesday at Denison, which
replaces the contest scheduled for McBride Stadium with Bluffton
University. No make-up date for the Bluffton game has been scheduled.
