RICHMOND, Ind. — Sophomore Eric Sturgeon had four hits, knocked in six runs and was the winning pitcher in the second game on Tuesday as the Earlham College baseball team swept Bluffton University in a doubleheader.

The Quakers beat the Beavers 6-4 in the opener at the Earlham College baseball field and then won 10-9 in the second contest with a ninth inning rally. “We battled back and showed some tenacity,” Earlham coach Tom Parkevich said of the second game victory. “The guys did a great job answering Bluffton’s scoring innings. The players feel really good about themselves.”

After going hitless in five at-bats in the second game, first-year Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) provided the winning hit in the ninth. “Cal Wilson had a rough day at the plate, but he really came through when it was on the line.” Parkevich said.

Trailing 9-8, first-year Tilmon Clark (Winchester, IN/Winchester) singled to start the ninth. Two outs later, Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) singled and senior Derreck Parkevich (Logansport, IN/Logansport) walked to load the bases to set the stage for Wilson, who ended the contest with a two-run single.

Bluffton jumped out to a 4-0 advantage before the Quakers got their offense going in the bottom of the second inning. Sturgeon’s grand slam homer tied the contest.

Bluffton added another run the third to go in front 5-4. Earlham tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth when Sturgeon singled in a run, but Bluffton scored twice in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Quakers plated two more runs to make it 7-7. First-year Danny Bridge (Logansport, IN/Lewis Cass) singled in a run and then Sturgeon banged in his sixth tally of the contest to tie the game.

Both teams scored in the seventh with junior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond) knocking in a run for the Quakers with a double to send the game into extra frames. Bluffton (14-15) scored in the ninth to go up by a run.

Sturgeon (1-5) worked the final three innings on the mound to earn the victory. Gallagher finished with three hits.

Game One

Earlham scored in the first inning to set the tone in the opener on a sacrifice fly by Sturgeon. The Quakers added three runs in the third to lead 4-0 on a run-scoring single by Wilson and a two-run single by junior Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead).

Bluffton cut into the lead with two runs in the fourth, but the Quakers scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie), which plated Sturgeon in the fifth. The Beavers added another in the sixth to make it 5-3.

Earlham’s final run came in the sixth on a homer by Bridge. Bluffton score a run in the seventh, but first-year Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) slammed the door to earn a save.

Derreck Parkevich (4-3) picked up the win for the Quakers after giving way to Anderson with one out in the sixth. Wilson led the Quakers with two hits.

Earlham (9-20) returns to action on Saturday as the Quakers entertain Wittenberg University at the Earlham College baseball field. The first game of the North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. Both teams continue the NCAC series with two more games Sunday on Earlham’s campus with the same start time.
