Quakers
Begin NCAC Series Against Wittenberg

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham
College baseball team opened its North Coast Athletic Conference
series on Saturday with Wittenberg University.
Wittenberg defeated the Quakers 11-2 and 15-7 on the Earlham College
baseball field.
In the opener, The Tigers (20-14, 8-6) led 11-0 before the Quakers
got on the scoreboard in the fifth. Junior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond,
IN/Richmond) doubled with two outs. Sophomore Eric Sturgeon (Logansport,
IN/Logansport) was hit by a pitch and then senior Derreck Parkevich
(Logansport, IN/Logansport) doubled both runners home.
Sturgeon (1-6) started on the mound working into the fourth inning
and he suffered the loss.
The second contest had a similar beginning for the Quakers as Wittenberg
led 6-0 after two innings.
Earlham scored a pair of runs in the fourth. First-year Cal Wilson
(Pendleton, IN/ Pendleton Heights) doubled in a run and junior Kyle
Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) knocked in the other run with a ground
out and it was 6-2.
Wittenberg added three more runs over the next two frames to lead
9-2 heading into the seventh. Both teams exploded in the last inning
as Wittenberg scored six times and Earlham runners crossed the plate
five times.
Sophomore Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) starting the
scoring with a RBI single. First-year Drew Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississinewa)
later scored on a wild pitch. Sturgeon knocked in two runs with a
double before Parkevich plated the final run with a single.
First-year Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) was tagged
with the loss to drop to 0-6 after working five innings for the Quakers.
Earlham (9-22, 0-13) entertains Wittenberg University on Sunday
at the Earlham College baseball field. The first game of the doubleheader
is at 1 p.m.
