Quakers Open Season in Kentucky

DANVILLE, Ky. — The Earlham College baseball team opened the season on Sunday with a pair of losses at Centre College.

The Quakers dropped the first contest 9-0 before falling 10-4 in the second game.

In the opener, junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) had two hits, while senior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and first-year John Metcalf (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) had singles. Senior Kyle Bond (Ft.Wayne, IN/Homestead) added a double.

Sophomore Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) worked four innings on the mound. Anderson (0-1) gave up nine runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Senior Rob Kinne (Ft. Wayne, IN/Canterbury) threw two scoreless frames to end the contest with two strikeouts.

Earlham got on the scoreboard in first inning of the second contest with one run, but Centre countered with three runs and eventually led 9-1 after a five-run fifth.

Sturgeon, senior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie), sophomore Tilmon Clark (Winchester, IN/Winchester) and first-year Jake Carr (Richmond, In/Richmond) led the Quakers with two hits each. Clark, Bond and first-year John Metcalf (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) all knocked in one run.

Sophomore Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) started on the hill for Earlham and went four innings. Kerns (0-1) surrendered eight hits and eight runs with five being earned, while striking out three.

The Quakers (0-2) are back on the road Saturday at Principia College for another doubleheader. The first game starts at 2 p.m. Game 1 box. Game 2 box.
