March 3, 2007

ELSAH, Ill. — The Earlham College baseball team dropped a doubleheader on Saturday to Principia College.

Principia won the opener 4-2 and then took the second game 13-7.

Junior Eric Sturgeon led the Quakers with five hits, while sophomore Danny Bridge had four. “Eric and Danny played really well,” Earlham Head Coach Tom Parkevich said. “Danny also made an outstanding diving catch in right field during the second game.”

In the opener, Principia scored a pair of runs in the second inning before the Quakers got on the scoreboard to make it 2-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly by senior Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie).

Principia (2-3) added single runs in the third and the fifth before the Quakers scored an unearned run in the sixth for the final tally of the contest.

Sophomore Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) worked five innings on the mound surrendering four runs and eight hits with two strikeouts as he fell to 0-2. Senior Rob Kinne (Ft. Wayne, IN/Canterbury) pitched a scoreless sixth for the Quakers.

After giving up four runs in the first frame of the second game, the Quakers eventually led by two runs, but couldn’t hold the advantage.

Senior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond) had a sacrifice fly in the third to make 4-1 before Principia scored in the fourth to lead 5-1.

Earlham’s offense came to life with a six-run fifth inning. Senior Kyle Bond (Ft.Wayne, IN/Homestead) knocked in the first run on a fielder’s choice with one out. First-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) followed with two-run double to make it 5-4.

One batter later, Bridge tied the game at 5-5 with a run-scoring single. Carr scored on a passed ball to give the Quakers a 6-5 lead. Gallagher’s RBI single made it 7-5.

Unfortunately for the Quakers, Principia had a six-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away.

Kinne (0-1) suffered the loss in relief of sophomore starter Randy Kerns after entering the game with one out in the first. Kinne, who was relieved with two outs in the fifth by sophomore Kevin Greve (Farmersburg, IN/North Central), gave up five hits and seven runs with only three of the scored being earned.

Earlham (0-4) is scheduled to play a doubleheader against Taylor University at McBride Stadium on Saturday, March 10. The first game of the non-conference affair is at 1 p.m. Game 1 box. Game 2 box.
