Quakers Fall in Extra Innings in Florida

For Immediate Release:
March 18, 2007

FT. PIERCE, Fla. — The Earlham College baseball team suffered a tough defeat on Sunday as the Quakers began their Florida spring trip with a 7-6 loss to Wisconsin-Superior in 11 innings.

The Quakers also lost senior captain Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie) with a broken hand in the 10th inning. “That is going to hurt us a lot,” Earlham Head Coach Tom Parkevich said of the loss of his centerfielder for perhaps as much as six weeks. “I feel bad for him because he is a senior.”

Wisconsin-Superior (3-3) scored the winning run in the 11th inning off of Earlham sophomore hurler Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport). Anderson worked six innings in relief of junior starter Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport). “Alex pitched well enough to win,” Parkevich said. “He did a great job.”

Anderson (0-3) gave up two earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Sturgeon threw five innings giving up two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Earlham pounded out 20 hits in the contest, but couldn’t get them in key situations as the Quakers left 13 runners on base. “We had plenty of opportunities to win,” Parkevich said. “Wisconsin-Superior came through with the clutch hits and we did not.”

Sophomore Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) gave the Quakers a 1-0 lead in the first with a run-scoring single.

Wisconsin-Superior got three runs in the fourth and added another in the fifth to lead 4-1, before the Quakers came back to tie the game with three scores in the sixth.

First-year John Metcalf (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) started the rally with a RBI single and then sophomore Danny Bridge (Logansport, IN/Lewis Cass) knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice. Senior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond) tied the contest at 4-4 with a RBI single.

Neither team could score again until Wisconsin-Superior added a pair of runs in the top of the 10th to lead 6-4. The Quakers fought back with two runs in the bottom of the frame when first-year Clint Bartlett (Dayton, OH/Carroll) and Colanese each produced runs on a fielder’s choice.

Gallagher, Sturgeon, Wilson and first-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers with three hits each, while Colanese, Metcalf and Bridge had two hits apiece.

Earlham (1-5) is back in action Monday against Carleton College at 10 a.m. and Wisconsin-Superior at 8 p.m. Box score.
