FT. PIERCE, Fla. — The Earlham College baseball team picked up a pair of victories on Monday as the Quakers completed the second day of their annual Florida trip.

Earlham avenged Sunday’s extra-inning loss to Wisconsin-Superior with a 16-2 victory in a night contest after defeating Carleton College 7-6 in a morning game.

The Quakers offense exploded for 18 hits in the 16-run outburst against Wisconsin-Superior as all nine starters scored and six had at least two hits.. “We had some players with some great offensive numbers,” Earlham Head Coach Tom Parkevich said. “To do this going into our day off is nice because we are able to enjoy it.”

Sophomore Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) led the way with five hits, while senior Kyle Bond (Ft.Wayne, IN/Homestead) and first-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) had three hits each.

Senior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond), junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) and sophomore Danny Bridge (Logansport, IN/Lewis Cass) had two hits apiece.

Carr knocked in three runs with Wilson, Bond and Sturgeon banged in two runs each.

Earlham scored a run in the top of the first and Wisconsin-Superior tied the game at 1-1 in the second. The Quakers added a pair of runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to go in front 4-1.

From that point, the Quakers score a dozen times over the final three frames to put the contest away.

Sophomore starting pitcher Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) picked up the victory, while classmate Kevin Greve (Farmersburg, IN/North Central) earned a save.

Kerns (1-1) went six innings giving up one run on six hits with four strikeouts. Greve worked the last three innings surrendering one run on one hit with two strikeouts.

Late rally leads to win over Carleton

Earlham scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the seventh when Bridge singled in Bond and first-year John Metcalf (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) to give the Quakers a 7-5 lead.

Carr came in to relieve Earlham starter, senior Rob Kinne (Ft. Wayne, IN/Canterbury), with one out in the seventh to pick up his first collegiate win on the mound.

Sturgeon got the final four outs to pick up his first save of the season. In the top of the ninth, Sturgeon got help from Metcalf, who snagged a line drive at first base and quickly threw to second base for a game-ending double play.

Earlham had 12 hits against Carleton, including three by Bridge.  The Quakers also got two hits apiece from Carr, Metcalf and Wilson. Aside from the two runs knocked in by Bridge, Earlham picked up run-scoring hits from first-year Clint Bartlett (Dayton, OH/Carroll), Sturgeon, Wilson, and Carr.

Earlham (3-5) returns to action in Florida with a doubleheader on Wednesday against SUNY-New Paltz. The opening game starts at 10 a.m.
