For Immediate Release:
March 21, 2007

FT. PIERCE, Fla. — The Earlham College baseball team swept a doubleheader from SUNY-New Paltz on Wednesday taking the opener 6-4 and posting a 3-0 victory in the second contest.

The victories give Earlham a four-game winning streak for the first time since another visit to Florida in March of 2004.

In the second game, the Quakers relied on the right arm of sophomore Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) as he pitched a shutout to pick up his first victory of the season. Anderson (1-3) scattered seven hits in seven innings of work, including two strikeouts.

The shutout was the first by an Earlham hurler since junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) blanked Bluffton University 2-0 on April 12, 2005.

Earlham’s offense capitalized on a pair of SUNY-New Paltz errors to score three runs on four hits.

First-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the way with two hits, while sophomores Tilmon Clark (Winchester, IN/Winchester) and Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) had one RBI apiece for the Quakers.

Big inning fuels comeback

In the opener, Earlham exploded in the top of the fifth inning to score six runs erasing a 2-0 deficit.

After the Quakers had tied the game with an unearned run and a run-scoring by senior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond), Sturgeon knocked in the go-ahead run with a single to make it 3-2.

Senior Kyle Bond (Ft.Wayne, IN/Homestead) followed with a two-run single with two outs to make it 5-2. First-year John Metcalf (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) added the final run with a single and it was 6-2.

Sturgeon (2-0) worked a complete game giving up two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Metcalf led the Quakers offensively with three hits, while Sturgeon had two hits.

Earlham (5-5) returns to the field on Friday with a doubleheader against Western Connecticut State University. The first game starts at 11 a.m.
