Quakers Winning Streak Broken
For Immediate Release:
March 23, 2007
FT. PIERCE, Fla. — The Earlham College baseball team was on the wrong side of a big inning on Friday as the Quakers had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Western Connecticut State University defeated Earlham 6-4 in the opener of a scheduled doubleheader before rain prevented the completion of the second game. Western Connecticut led 4-0 with the Quakers batting in the bottom of the fourth when showers covered the field.
Earlham grabbed a 3-0 in the third inning on run-scoring singles by junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) and first-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond). Senior Kyle Bond (Ft.Wayne, IN/Homestead) added a sacrifice fly.
Bond and Sturgeon teamed on a double steal to give the Quakers a 4-0 advantage in the fourth. Bond swiped second, while Sturgeon stole home.
From that point the game belonged to Western Connecticut. The Colonials scored a run in the fifth and added five more in the sixth to go in front by two runs.
Sturgeon, Carr and sophomore Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) had two hits each for the Quakers, while Bond and sophomore Danny Bridge (Logansport, IN/Lewis Cass) had one apiece.
Sophomore Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) started on the mound for the Quakers and left the contest with two outs in the sixth. Kerns gave up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Carr (1-1) took the loss in relief of Kerns in the sixth. Carr got two outs, but surrendered three runs on three hits. Sophomore Kevin Greve (Farmersburg, IN/North Central) got in the final out of the sixth for the Quakers.
Earlham (5-6) finishes its visit to Florida on Saturday as the Quakers play Grinnell College. The single contest begins at 12:30 p.m. Box score.
