Quakers Begin Conference Schedule at Home

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team played its first home games of the 2007 season at McBride Stadium on Saturday night as the Quakers opened their North Coast Athletic Conference slate with a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan University.
Following a Richmond High School doubleheader delayed over 90 minutes by rain, the Quakers finally took the field over two hours after their scheduled start falling 14-3 in the opener before dropping the second game 18-7 in the early morning hours on Sunday.
Ohio Wesleyan worked its way to an 11-0 advantage in the first game before the Quakers got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the third. Sophomore Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) knocked in a run as he grounded into a double play, while senior Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) added a run on a double.
First-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) had a run-scoring single in the seventh for Earlham’s final tally of the contest.
Wilson, Bond and junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) led the Quakers with two hits each.
Sophomore starting pitcher Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) went two innings and took the loss to go 1-2 on the season.
The second game begin with Ohio Wesleyan scoring 11 times before the Quakers pushed two runs home in the third on RBI singles by sophomore Danny Bridge (Logansport, IN/Lewis Cass) and Sturgeon.
After Ohio Wesleyan added two more runs in the fifth, Earlham scored four times to make it 13-6 in the bottom of the frame. Sturgeon had a run-scoring single and Wilson blasted a three-run homer to make it 13-6.
Carr knocked in the final run of the game with a single in the seventh.
Sophomore starter Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) got the loss on the mound for the Quakers to fall to 1-5.
Earlham (5-10, 0-2 in NCAC West) resumes its series with Ohio Wesleyan with another doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.
