For Immediate Release:
April 1, 2007

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team completed its four-game North Coast Athletic Conference series against Ohio Wesleyan University at McBride Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Ohio Wesleyan defeated the Quakers 17-7 in the opener and 28-3 in the second game.

In the first game, Ohio Wesleyan led 5-0 before the Quakers got on the scoreboard when senior Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond) scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately for Earlham, the Bishops scored 10 more runs by the top of the fifth.

Earlham rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap, but that was all of the offense the Quakers could produce.

Sophomore Cal Wilson (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) and senior Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) knocked in runs with singles before first-year John Metcalf (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) tripled with the bases loaded. On the play, Ohio Wesleyan’s defense challenged Metcalf at third, but he scored when the throw from outfield went into the dugout.

Metcalf led the Quakers with three hits, while Bond added two hits. Junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) pitched four innings and took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the season.

After Ohio Wesleyan built a 2-0 lead in the second contest, Metcalf had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit in half. Ohio Wesleyan broke the game open from that point.

Earlham did score twice in the seventh inning on a wild pitch and a RBI single by senior Rob Kinne (Ft. Wayne, IN/Canterbury).

Gallagher and first-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers with two hits each. Sophomore Kevin Greve (Farmersburg, IN/North Central) started on the mound and went three innings suffering his second loss of the season in two decisions.

Earlham (5-12, 0-4 in NCAC West) plays a doubleheader against Lincoln Christian College at McBride Stadium on Tuesday. The first game of the non-conference affair starts at 5 p.m. Game one box score. Game two box score.
